What Can I Do to Help?
There are numerous ways in which you, as a member of the Grafton
community, can support this project. After reading below, please
use the links to contact any member of the Silk Road Project planning
team via email. Or you can leave a message for them by calling
Grafton High School at 757-898-0530!
- Cultural Demonstrator: Are you a member of an organization that
does Greek dancing? Do you have a collection of inherited
kimonos? Do you still prepare authentic and traditional foods for
your family? We are looking for dancers, musicians, cooks,
story-tellers, and anyone else who might come to Grafton on the morning
of our Marketplace and recreate your culture for our students.
- Shoppers: As they progress through their research, each class
will be preparing a list of supplies that they need in order to create
their Marketplace stand. We need volunteers to donate items from
those lists as well as to help purchase some items using grant funds.
- Ambassadors: Although we want this experience to be a rich,
life-filled one, it also needs to be an educational morning. We
are looking for paretns to volunteer on the morning of our Marketplace
to help us make sure that our 200+ students move along the Silk Road without acting like the marauders
that befell many Silk Road caravans!
- Set-Up/Clean-Up: If you're more of a "behind-the-scenes" type of
person, we need you, too! There are four teachers on the planning
team, and this is a big
project. We'll need lots of help putting the Marketplace together
and taking it apart.
If you can help us in any way, please email one of the English teachers
listed below by clicking on their name. We'd also be thrilled to
read any suggestions about other resources or ideas for recreating our
Silk Road that you might share with us!
