The Silk Road Project at Grafton High
School
Inspired by the desire to bring the cultures of the English 10
curriculum to life for their students, several Grafton High School
English teachers engaged the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in
professional development in the Summer of 2005 to learn about how to
recreate the Silk Road here at Grafton High School. Working as a
team, the English 10 teachers are planning Grafton High's Silk Road
Marketplace.
This festival, to be held in June, will require each of the school's
English 10 classes to adopt a culture known along the Silk Road.
The class will divide into research teams, who will each investiage a
particular cultural element of their assigned civilization.
Different groups will explore topics such as customs and traditions,
art, religion, clothing, food, and dance. At the Marketplace,
each culture's stand will be responsible for educating students in
other classes about its adopted culture.
In addition to this fact-finding mission, students will be able to
experience a wide array of cultural demonstrations. The planning
team hopes to offer Grafton's students international food, dance,
music, and storytelling by involving the larger Grafton community.
