How to make a
scatterplot in Excel
Open file.
In the first row type the names of your columns (headers).
In the first column type your x values.
In the second column type your y values.
Move the cursor to the cell A1, click and drag to highlight your table
(including the headers), release.
Click on the chart wizard button, or select INSERT, then CHART.
Select XY (Scatterplot), then NEXT.
Your data range should be entered already for you. Click NEXT.
Enter appropriate chart titles and x and y axis labels. Click NEXT.
Then click FINISH.
Getting a line of
best fit in Excel with its equation.
Click on the dots on your scatterplot to highlight them.
Right click. Select ADD TRENDLINE.
On the TYPE tab, select LINEAR.
Click on the OPTIONS tab, select DISPLAY EQUATION AND DISPLAY R-SQUARED.
Click OK.
You should now have a line of best fit and its equation on your graph.
The R-squared tells you the "goodness of fit". The closer
R-squared is to 1 the better the fit.
