  1. Course Description:

 

This course offers an historical and cultural study of the world. The 13 Standards of Learning are encompassed within six thematic assessment categories: Human Origins and Early Civilizations; Classical Civilizations and Rise of Religious Traditions; Postclassical Civilizations; Regional Interactions; Geography; and Civics and Economics.

 

 

  1. Competencies: Upon completion of this course, you will be better able to do

                             the following:

·        Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the 13 Standards of Learning as described in the Course Outline below.

·        Apply skills in historical research and geographical analysis by using a variety of tools such as maps, graphs, primary sources, pictures, and artifacts.

I.                   First Quarter (Sept. 5 – Nov. 3)

A. SOL 2: Development of Humankind

B. SOL 3: Ancient River Valley Civilizations

C. SOL 4: Persia, India, and China

 

II.               Second Quarter (Nov. 6 – Jan. 25)

      A. SOL 5: Ancient Greece

      B. SOL 6: Ancient Rome

 

III.           Third Quarter (Jan. 30 – Mar. 30)

                  A. SOL 7: The Byzantine Empire & Russia

      B. SOL 8: Islamic Civilization

      C. SOL 9: Europe during the Middle Ages

D. SOL 12: Late Medieval Period

 

IV.              Fourth Quarter (Apr. 10 – June 14)

A. SOL 10: Civilizations and Empires in the Eastern Hemisphere (Japan, African Kingdoms and Empires)

B. SOL 11: Civilizations and Empires in the Western

     Hemisphere (Mayan, Aztec, and Incan)

      C. SOL 13: Developments Leading to Renaissance in Europe

      D. SOL Exam Review

      E. Post SOL Exam Project 

 

     6.    Course Requirements:

 

·        Participation in class discussions and activities

·        Thorough and timely completion of assignments

·        Preparation for class (being on time; bringing materials to class, etc.)

·        Required Materials:

-         notebook

-         folder

-         pens/pencils

-         colored pencils or markers

-         4 x 6 index cards

 

 

   7.      Attendance Policy:

 

To comply with Virginia Law, students are expected to attend school every day and to be on time unless there is illness or death in the immediate family. It is the STUDENT’S responsibility to see the instructor for make up work and be prepared for scheduled tests and project due dates.

 

   8.      Evaluation:

 

            Assessments: Tests, Quizzes and Major Projects – 50%

                        In Class work:  Presentations, Activities, and Notebook – 35%

                        Homework: All assignments – 15%

 

·        Students will engage in a VARIETY of classroom activities and will be given a VARIETY of assignments.

·        Homework will be given on a regular basis.

·        Tests:

-         Tests will be announced AT LEAST 2 blocks before the test date.

-         Study guides will be provided for all major tests.

 

   10.    Class Expectations:

 

·         Students should be on time to class and in their seats when the bell rings. Class will begin at the start of the bell.

·         All assignments should be turned in on the day that they are due! Late work will be down graded. Missing work will be calculated as a “zero,” unless otherwise discussed with the teacher. Keep in mind that zeroes add up and can greatly affect your grade!

·         ALL WORK IS TO BE YOUR OWN, unless the teacher specifically states that the assignment is a group assignment. Any “shared” work will result in a zero for ALL parties involved and parental notification.

·         Respecting one another is critical to a productive and enjoyable class. Students will be expected to respect one another, the teacher, and themselves.
