Text: Biology Principles and
Explorations, by Johnson and Raven
This course is an entry level exploration into living systems through
investigations of life processes, cellular organization, inheritance,
ecology and changes in organisms over time.
Semester 1 topics: Scientific process
Cells
Bioenergetics
Reproduction
Genetics
Origin of life
Semester 2 topics: Ecology
Microorganisms
Plants
Invertebrates
Vertebrates
You will need : a 3-ring binder with paper, pen and pencils, a
set of coloring pencils.
Grading: Tests will count 50% of your quarter grade. There
will be usually 3 per quarter. Labs, quizzes, homework and other
activities will count 50%. Grades are averaged numerically.
To receive credit in this class you must have a passing grade and pass
the Biology SOL Test which is given in May.
Science Project is required. If your project is in a life science
category and you win 1st.place in the York County Science Fair in
January, you will get an “A” for 2nd. Quarter. If you
place 2nd., 3rd., or honorable mention you will receive extra
credit. Incentives will be given throughout the semester
for completing the necessary paperwork for entering the Fair.
Your Responsibilities:
Getting to class on time (in your seat when the tardy bell rings).
Bringing your book, notebook, agenda and pencil to class.
Following directions and not interfering with instruction.
Being courteous to me and your peers.
If you need extra help after school, I am here every day until 3 pm
unless I have a meeting or conference.
