PLEASE NOTE: THE
RETEST PRIVILEGE WAS FOR FIRST
QUARTER ONLY!
Welcome to
Mr. Falin's website. I
hope both
students and parents will find this website helpful. Above are
links to subject specific pages for Algebra 2 and Algebra 2 / Trig
classes.
There are also links for general information which are very
important. Be sure to familiarize yourself with this information
to maximize the benefits of these classes.
The subject websites listed in the above menu will contain PowerPoint
presentations which may be used for study purposes, a
HOMEWORK
LOG so that you may keep up with the assignments throughout the
year, and SAMPLE TESTS so that the student may
practice for an upcoming test. Answer keys to some of the sample tests
are also available in PowerPoint.
Please note that we will be
completing "Sample Tests" in class to help prepare for the upcoming
test. Best wishes for success..
Note Taking Tips for Math
1.
Write down the "title" of the
lesson. If you don't know, ask the teacher.
2. Write down the math problem and
each
step in the solution using math symbols. Next to each step write down
"in
your own words" exactly what you are doing.
3.
Write down a "question mark"
next to anything you don't understand. Ask the teacher to explain the
parts
where you have written your "question marks". Don't just "let it
go" thinking that you will figure it out later. Many times, it doesn't
happen.
4. When you
get home, before you start
your homework, "highlight in color" the titles you have written in
your notes. The highlighted information will help to give you the "big
picture" of what you are doing.
5.
Remember, do all homework problems,
not
just some of them!

Tests will
be
given following a set schedule which is posted on each of the
subject websites. These tests approximately 2 weeks
apart. Prior to each test, a "sample test" will be completed in
class. During this process we will review the answers and discuss
questions the class may have.
Retests are
available to all students during the FIRST QUARTER
ONLY. The retest must be done within 1 week
after receiving the graded test. This may be done on Tuesday or
Thursday from 1:55 until 2:30.
Tutoring may
be available on Tuesdays or Thursdays as my schedule allows. Any
tutoring must be scheduled ahead of time and then will be from 1:55
until 2:30.
Quiz grades
will occur from a variety of events. We will have what I call "Do
Now" exercises to be completed at the start of most class
sessions. The "Do Now" will usually focus on recent lessons, but
may also serve to review information from the past. These are
sometimes collected and scored as quizzes.
Class Participation
is a
critical part of the learning process. The grading of class
participation is handled in two way. Direct observation is one method
of grading. Sometimes following
the daily lesson, the students will complete what I call a "Lesson
Quiz". This will consist of 3-5 questions that will focus on the
lesson for that day.
Assignments
will consist of some work to be completed during class, but will mostly consist of work to be
completed
outside of class. This will be checked or collected at
unannounced times. They may be handed in individually or in
groups of 2-4 assignments. It is the student's responsibility to
always keep up with the assignments and always be prepared to turn in
the work in the manner requested. (Top of Page)
It is suggested that each student have their own graphing calculator
for home and classroom use. The Virginia End of Course Exams (SOL
Exams) allow for the student to use a Texas Intruments TI-83 or TI-83+
graphing calculator for Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2 exams.
They may also be used for some of the Science SOL Exams. The
calculators may also be used on any test in my class as well as Quizzes
and Assignments. (Top of
