SYLLABUS FOR GERMAN I

COURSE DESCRIPTION: The course provides an introduction to culture, elementary grammar, conversational skill development, and introductory reading, writing, and listening skills.

OBJECTIVES
The student will acquire basic skills in listening and reading.
The student will communicate basic ideas and information through speaking and writing.
The student will acquire cultural awareness by the study of geography, history, and customs of Germanic people.

TEXTBOOK: German I uses Komm Mit (level 1).

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER: Unit 1 -- WER BIST DU? -- Meeting and greeting people. Asking and giving names. The Alphabet and pronunciation. Numbers from 0 to 20. Asking someone's age and giving yours. Asking where someone is from and telling where you are from. Talking about how someone gets to school. Forming questions. The definite articles der, die, das. Subject pronouns/Nominative Case. The verb sein = to be. Geography of German-speaking countries. The German States and capitals.

OCTOBER/NOVEMBER: Unit 2 -- SPIEL UND SPASS -- Talking about interests. Popular sports and hobbies. Expressing likes and dislikes. Using gern, lieber, and am liebsten. Saying when you do various activities. Asking for an opinion and expressing yours. Agreeing and disagreeing. Using expressions stimmt/stimmt nicht. Seasons of the year. Subject pronouns and the present tense of verbs. Verb-stems ending in d, t, or n. Word order. Formal/informal address. Question formation.

NOVEMBER/DECEMBER: Unit 3 -- KOMM MIT NACH HAUSE! -- Talking about where you and others live. Offering something to eat and drink. Responding to an offer. Saying please, thank you and you’re welcome. Describing a room and its furniture. Talking about and describing family members. Numbers 0 - 100. Word order: verb in second place. Present tense. The möchte-forms. Indefinite articles ein, eine (in the nominative case). Possessive adjectives.

FEBRUARY/MARCH: Unit 4 -- ALLES FÜR DIE SCHULE! -- Talking about school subjects and class schedules. Using a schedule to talk about Time. The 24-hour time system. Sequencing events. Expressing likes, dislikes, and favorites. Using gern/nicht gern. Responding to good news and bad news. Comparing and contrasting the German school day and the German grading system. Shopping for school supplies and talking about prices. German currency. Numbers 0 – 1000.

MARCH/APRIL: Unit 5 -- KLAMOTTEN KAUFEN -- Shopping for clothing. Expressing wishes when shopping. Talking about trying on clothes. Expressing opinions. Using the möchte-forms. Giving compliments and responding to them. Talking about exchange rates, German store hours, and German clothing sizes. Numbers, prices, colors. Direct Object pronouns/Accusative Case. Definite and indefinite articles (in the accusative case). Separable-prefix verbs. Stem-changing verbs.

APRIL/MAY: Unit 6 -- PLÄNE MACHEN -- Starting a conversation. Talking about what you do in your free time. Talking about how often you do things. Making plans. Telling time. Ordering food and beverages in a restaurant. Talking about how something tastes. Paying the check. Tipping in Germany. Using the möchte-forms. Separable-prefix verbs. Stem-changing verbs. Modal auxiliary verb: wollen.

MAJOR CLASS REQUIREMENTS

  1. Students are required to study vocabulary regularly, complete all homework assignments, and participate in class in the target language.
  2. Students are required to come to class on time, prepared with all necessary materials.
  3. Assessments include Section Quizzes, Section Tests, Unit Tests, Projects, Oral and Written Proficiency Assessments, Listening Assessments, and Semester Exams.

GRADING SYSTEM

Grades for each quarter will be computed as follows:

Grades are figured by cumulative point average.

A = 100 - 92

B = 91 - 84

C = 83 - 75

D = 74 - 67

F = 66 - 0

German I SOLs:

Person to Person Communication

GI.1 The student will exchange simple spoken and written information in German.

GI.2 The student will demonstrate skills necessary to sustain brief oral and written exchanges in German using familiar phrases and sentences.

GI.3 The student will understand simple spoken and written German based on familiar topics that are presented through a variety of media.

GI.4 The student will use verbal and non-verbal cues to understand simple spoken and written messages in German.

Oral and Written Presentation

GI.5 The student will present orally and in writing information in German that contains a variety of familiar vocabulary, phrases, and structural patterns.

GI.6 The student will present rehearsed material in German, such as brief narratives, monologues, dialogues, poetry, and songs.

GI.7 The student will develop an awareness of perspectives, practices, and products of German-speaking cultures.

GI.8 The student will recognize that perspectives, practices, and products of German-speaking cultures are interrelated.

GI.9 The student will recognize how information acquired in the study of German and information acquired in other subject areas reinforce one another.

Cultural and Linguistic Comparisons

GI.10 The student will demonstrate an understanding of the significance of culture through comparisons between German-speaking cultures and the cultures of the United States.

GI.11 The student will compare basic elements of the German language to the English language.

Communication across Communities

GI.12 The student will identify situations in which German language skills and cultural knowledge may be applied beyond the classroom setting for recreational, educational, and occupational purposes.
