COURSE DESCRIPTION:  This advanced course includes cultural studies as well as continuing development of reading, writing, listening and speaking skills.

 

OBJECTIVES

1.        The student will understand more complex materials in listening and reading.

2.        The student will communicate more complex ideas and information in speaking and writing.

3.        The student will demonstrate knowledge of additional aspects of Germanic culture.

SEPTEMBER: Unit 1 -- DAS LAND AM MEER -- Reporting past events. Asking how someone liked something. Expressing enthusiasm or disappointment. Responding enthusiastically or sympathetically. Asking and telling what you may or may not do. Asking for information. Inquiring about someone’s health and responding. Asking about and expressing pain. Expressing hope. Past tense. Dative case prepositions. Reflexive pronouns. Object pronouns.

 

OCTOBER: Unit 2 -- AUF IN DIE JUGENDHERBERGE --  Asking for and making suggestions.  Expressing preference and giving a reason. Expressing wishes. Expressing doubt, conviction, and resignation. Asking for information and making assumptions. Expressing hearsay. Asking for, making, and responding to suggestions. Two-way prepositions. Adjective endings. The verb hätte. Word order in dass- and ob-clauses.

 

NOVEMBER: Unit 3 --  AUSSEHEN: WICHTIG ODER NICHT? -- Asking for and expressing opinions. Expressing sympathy and resignation. Giving advice and giving a reason. Admitting something and expressing regret. Sequencing events. Verbs requiring prepositional phrases. Word order in clauses/weil- clauses. Da- and wo- compounds. Infinitive clauses.

 

DECEMBER: Unit 4 --  VERHÄLTNIS ZU ANDEREN -- Hypothesizing. Introducing another point of view. Agreeing. Giving advice. Ordinal numbers. Relative clauses. Wenn-, weil- and dass- clauses. Hätte, würde, and wäre/subjunctive forms. The genitive case. 

 

JANUARY: Unit 5 --  RECHTE ODER PFLICHTEN -- Talking about what is possible. Saying what you would have liked to do/subjunctive. Saying that something is going on right now/indicative. Expressing surprise, relief and resignation. Reporting past events. Reporting hearsay. The past tense of  Modals/imperfect The könnte-, hätte, wäre/subjunctive forms. Exam preparation.

 

FEBRUARY: Unit 6 --  MEDIEN: STETS GUT INFORMIERT? -- Asking someone to take a position. Asking for reasons. Expressing opinions. Reporting past events. Agreeing/disagreeing, interrupting and changing the subject. Expressing surprise or annoyance. Talking about leisure time activities. Narrative/imperfect past tense. The conversational past tense. Superlative forms of adjectives.

 

MARCH: Unit 7 --  OHNE REKLAME GEHT ES NICHT --  Expressing conviction, uncertainty, and what seems to be true. Expressing annoyance. Comparing. Eliciting agreement. Determiners of quantity. Adjectives endings following determiners of quantity. Derselbe, der gleiche, irgendein, irgendwelche. Werbung/pro und contra.

 

APRIL: Unit 8 --  WEG MIT DEN VORURTEILEN! -- Expressing surprise, disappointment, and annoyance. Making an assumption. Making suggestions and recommendations. Giving advice. Verbs with prefixes/summary. Coordinating conjunctions/summary. Narrative past tense. Conversational past tense

 

MAY: Unit 9 --  AKTIV FÜR DIE UMWELT --  Talking about environmental concerns. Expressing concern. Making accusations. Offering solutions. Making polite requests. Saying what is being done about something. Hypothesizing. Subjunctive forms of modals: können, müssen, dürfen, sollen and sein. Passive voice/present tense. Use of modals in passive voice. Conditional sentences. 

 

JUNE: Unit 10 --  DIE KUNST ZU LEBEN --  Making choices. Expressing preference, given certain possibilities. Expressing envy and admiration. Expressing happiness and sadness. Saying that something is or was being done. Genitive case. Prepositions with the genitive case. Subjunctive forms of modals. Past participles. Summary of the Passive voice.  Final Exam preparation.

 

MAJOR CLASS REQUIREMENTS

1.        Students are required to study vocabulary regularly, complete all homework assignments, and participate in class in the target language.

2.        Students are required to come to class on time, prepared with all necessary materials.

3.        Assessments include Section Quizzes, Unit Tests, Projects, Oral and Written Proficiency Assessments, Listening Assessments, and Semester Exams.

4.        *German IV students will have certain additional requirements -- see handouts.

 

GRADING SYSTEM

Grades for each quarter will be computed as follows:

 -- Quizzes 25%

 -- Homework 10%

-- Classwork/Oral Participation 10%

Grades are figured by cumulative point average.
