YCSD Summer Academy

YCSD Summer Academic Programs - 2008

GENERAL INFORMATION

Location: Middle and high school programs are held at York High School. Elementary programs are held at Yorktown Elementary School and Magruder Elementary School.
Dates: See specific Summer Academy information pages for dates and times. Students and staff will have Thursday, July 3, and Friday, July 4, as holidays.
Registration: The Summer Academic Programs Registration Form is available in the offices of all York County schools.
Transportation: Express bus service will be provided.
Attendance: No absences or tardies are permitted in any of the YCSD Summer Academic Programs.
Tuition: Some programs are free of charge; others require a tuition payment. Refunds for withdrawals/cancellations prior to the beginning of classes will be made on July 10 and must be picked up at York High School. Parents will complete a Withdrawal Form and submit it to the appropriate administrator by July 9. No refunds will be made after July 10. No refund of fees will be made if a student is dismissed for disciplinary reasons or excessive absences.
Books/Materials: Textbooks, instructional resources, and library services are available during the Summer Academic Programs. All textbooks and library books must be returned prior to taking the final exams or receiving credit for completed work. Students who damage books will be required to pay the repair or replacement cost. Students who have not met obligations with regard to books or materials will not be permitted to take final exams or to receive credit for completed work.
Examinations: There are no exam exemptions during Summer Academy.
Conduct: The York County School Division Student Handbook & Student Conduct Code will be strictly enforced.
Dress Code: The dress code, as set forth in the York County School Division Student Handbook & Student Conduct Code, will be strictly enforced.
Food Service: Snack foods are available for purchase during middle and high school programs. All students (elementary, middle & high) may bring snacks.
Parking: Students wishing to park on campus during High School Academy must pay a $25.00 fee at the time of registration. Rules will be issued with the parking permit.

All students from within YCSD should visit the Guidance department of their school to receive the necessary forms for Summer School.

Virtual High School Summer Academy

Elementary School Academy Middle School Academy High School Academy

The Elementary School Academy is designed for students currently enrolled in grades K-5 based on test results (Stanford and Standards of Learning Tests), academic performance, and teacher/administrator recommendation. There is no fee for the academy for students who qualify through school recommendation. Limited space may be available for tuition-paying students. Tuition is $265.00 for York County residents. Parents who wish to enroll their child in this academy must complete the Summer Academic Programs Registration Form online by school staff.

The Elementary School Academy provides students with remediation in the areas of English: reading & writing and mathematics through a hands-on approach as well as direct teacher instruction and the use of computer software. The focus of instruction will be appropriate grade-level Standards of Learning. Test-taking strategies and study skills are included.

Registration
• Selected participants will be registered by their home schools, and parents of these students will be notified by their child’s principal by June 6.

• Students currently enrolled in the York County School Division (grades K-5) who do not qualify for the academy based on school recommendation may register for the Elementary School Academy at their home school until June 11. Students who have not registered by June 11 must register at Yorktown Elementary School and/or Magruder Elementary School on Tuesday, June 17, or Wednesday, June 18, from 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. NO REGISTRATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER JUNE 18.

The Middle School English and Math Academy is designed for students enrolled in grades 6-8 who have been identified as needing academic support in the areas of English: reading & writing and mathematics. There is no fee for the academy for students who qualify through school recommendation. Limited space may be available for tuition-paying students. Tuition is $265.00 for York County residents. Students will be given the opportunity to demonstrate mastery of the objectives at the appropriate grade level.

The Middle School History/Social Science Academy provides students with instruction based on the Standards of Learning for each grade level. The academy will involve direct teacher instruction, hands-on activities and projects. Students will be given the opportunity to demonstrate mastery of the objectives at the appropriate grade level.

High School Academy is designed for rising 9-12 grade students. High school students may earn a repeat credit. For a semester mathematics Part B course, students may earn either .5 repeat credit or .5 original credit. Each course is 78 instructional class hours; credit cannot be awarded to students who fail to receive 78 hours of instruction. There are no exam exemptions during Summer Academy. Driver Education/Behind-the-Wheel instruction is not offered. Courses with low enrollment may not be offered. High School Academy course offerings are not intended for International Baccalaureate students. Tuition is $350.00 for York County residents; tuition for non-resident students is $400.00. Checks are made payable to the school where registration is completed. The Summer Academic Programs Registration Form must be completed online by school staff.

Exam Schedule
• End-of-Course SOL Tests: English Writing-MC, July 15; English Writing, July 16; other SOL Tests, July 29.

Registration
• Students may register for only one course.
• Students currently enrolled in the York County School Division (grades 9-12) may register for the High School Academy at their home school until June 11. Students who have not registered by June 11 must register at York High School on Tuesday, June 17, Wednesday, June 18, or Thursday, June 19, from 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. Late registrations will be accepted at York High School on Monday, June 23, from 8 a.m. – 10 a.m., and a $25.00 late charge will apply. NO REGISTRATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER JUNE 23.
• Non-resident students may register on a space-available basis, and parents must provide transportation. Non-resident students must submit a completed Out-of-System Student Information Form signed by the principal of their home school.
