New 6th Grade Schedule for 2008-09

Beginning next school year, sixth grade students in YCSD middle schools will follow a revised bell schedule. This change, designed to provide students with additional and daily time for the core subjects of language arts and math, will only affect sixth grade students. The school day start and end times will remain the same.

Sixth-grade students will take social studies and science on alternate days within this schedule, and elective, exploratory or PE classes will be taken on each school day. An example of a student’s schedule will look like this:

  Day 1 Day 2
Block I Language Arts & Reading (90 minutes)
Block II Math (90 minutes)
Block III Social Studies (90 minutes) Science (90 minutes)
Block IV Elective/Exploratory/P.E.
(90 minutes)
Elective/Exploratory/P.E.
(90 minutes)

Elementary students are accustomed to longer blocks of time for language arts. With this new block schedule, students should have an easier time adjusting to the middle school day. Additionally, the revised schedule will allow for fewer class changes for sixth-grade students. Also, it will increase the instructional time students spend in math by 135 hours over the course of the school year.

During orientations and back-to-school nights, middle school staff will provide parents with additional information about the implementation of the revised sixth grade schedule. In the meantime, if you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact your student’s middle school.
