The Reading Specialist at Seaford Elementary provides both teacher support and student remediation services.  The reading specialist helps teachers with their reading instruction planning, resources and professional development.  The reading specialist is involved in   identifyingstudents in need of reading remediation.  The following sources of data are used to determine which students are in the need of additional reading assistance:

Reading Interventions:

Making Connections:  This is a comprehension program, focusing on reading strategies and non-fiction texts.  This program is for students close to grade level or on grade level.  Small groups of three work with a para educator daily for a duration of one semester.

Reading Specialist services:  The reading specialist works with small groups of students, performing below grade level on reading skills which may include phonics, word study, word recognition, comprehension strategies, fluency, vocabulary and test taking skills.  The duration of this intervention depends on student progress.

Tutoring:  Para Educators are involved in student tutoring with reading during the school day.  One or two students will work with a para educator on reading, writing and skill objectives indicated by the classroom teacher.  The reading specialist monitors and provides resources for the tutoring sessions.  The duration of this intervention depends on student progress.

*Degrees of Reading Power (DRP)

As part of its continuing effort to ensure that students acquire the skills necessary for effective reading comprehension, the York County School Division will administer the Degrees of Reading Power (DRP) assessment beginning in the 2005-2006 school year.  The DRP will be administered to students in grades 3-8 in the fall and in the spring.

The DRP monitors students’ reading comprehension levels and assists teachers in providing appropriate reading instruction for students.  DRP results indicate students’ understanding of what they have read and also provide a source of information about students’ annual reading growth.  Scores from the DRP assessments do not affect students’ grades.
