2007-2008
A simple question was asked of me at our Kindergarten round up –
“What am I committing to by signing
up for PTA?”![]()
There are many different levels of commitment in PTA:
1. Fill out your Membership Envelope – and become a member!
We encourage all adults in the family to join. Membership is $5 a person. By becoming a Member and paying dues, you are helping to support the many different programs we provide here at Seaford Elementary. In return, you and your child will receive many benefits from SES PTA. When you join Seaford PTA, you are also a member of the State and National PTA and have access to many of their resources thru their websites and newsletters. By becoming a member you are not obligating yourself as a volunteer, only as a person who supports the mission of the PTA: To promote the welfare of children and youth in home, school, and community. To bring a closer relation in the home and the school, that parents and teachers may cooperate intelligently in the education of their children.
2. Support Our Fundraisers.
The PTA sponsors 2 major fundraisers a year. In the fall we have a catalog fundraiser, where traditionally we have sold gift wrap and other novelties. 50% of money raised goes directly back into the PTA budget to support our programs. In the spring we sponsor a “Think a Thon” and 100% of the money goes to support our programs.
We have other events throughout the year, where money is requested for participation, but the money requested is only to offset the cost of the event – it is not our intention to raise additional funds with that activity.
3. Volunteer.
PTA – Parent Teacher Association – is compiled of parents, just like you. Many of us work outside the home, some of us work from home, and then there are a few of us chasing and car-pooling our children around all day. Whichever category you may fit in – there is a place for you in the PTA. There are many sponsored events that take place on the evenings and/or weekends, which you could help with, as well as activities that can be done from home. We will be happy if you help us with one event or help us one day a week. If you have the little voice inside your head saying “I could do something…” – please contact a member of the board and we will find the right place for you. Volunteering is a great way to get to know other parents, the staff, and your children’s new friends. There are opportunities to volunteer in the classroom, the library, the storybook garden, at events, at home, thru the computer – you name it! Take a look at our committee list and see if any of the programs and/or activities interests you.
4. Attend PTA Meetings.
If you are still uncertain about the PTA, come to a meeting. The meetings are a great way to find out what is going on in the school and what the plans are for the PTA. Meetings are typically held on the 1st Monday of the month, 7pm, with a few exceptions. You are always welcome to join us. Please feel free to sit back and listen to what we have to offer. Watch for notices on the y-line and Seafordgram about upcoming meetings.
