Reading Recovery
Magruder Elementary School Reading Recovery Teachers:
Mrs. Kay Cronan and Ms Lana Nunnally

What is Reading Recovery?
Reading Recovery is a program designed to help selected first grade children who need additional assistance in learning to read and write.  Students receive individual reading and writing lessons for 30 minutes each day.

What are the goals of the Reading Recovery Program?
The goal of Reading Recovery is to help children become independent readers who enjoy reading and writing.  Students who successfully complete Reading Recovery should be able to read with the average readers in their classrooms.

Who can participate in Reading Recovery?
First grade children who are in need of extra help in reading may be eligible for Reading Recovery services.  Teacher recommendation and student performance on the Observation Survey form the basis for selection into the program.

What is a typical Reading Recovery lesson?
A typical 30 minute Reading Recovery lesson consists of the following:
  • Rereading familiar books
  • Rereading a book introduced the previous day
  • Learning how words work
  • Writing a short story
  • Reading a new book
What helps to make the Reading Recovery program successful?
Reading Recovery teachers help children develop the strategies that good readers use.  They teach children to apply these strategies to new texts and emphasize reading for meaning.  By using cues and strategies, children apply skills more readily when they encounter unfamiliar books.

Parents take part by listening to their child read one or two books each evening.  In addition, parents may visit the school and watch their child read and write during a Reading Recovery lesson.  Parents also ensure high attendance from their child so that no Reading Recovery lessons are missed.

What are some important features of Reading Recovery?
  • Early intervention to prevent failure
  • Tutoring in addition to classroom instruction
  • Short-term acceleration, approximately 20 weeks or less
  • Focus on the student's strengths
  • Students learn strategies to help them become independent readers
  • Students learn to predict, confirm and understand what they read
  • Student knowledge and performance guide instruction
  • Learning to read is aided by daily composing and writing
If you have any questions about the Reading Recovery program, please call Mrs. Cronan (564-6649) or Ms Nunnally (220-4052).
