Elementary Students Work to Build Butterfly Habitats

Since September 2012, Virginia Cooperative Extension-York/Poquoson has been working with all ten YCSD elementary schools on installing, expanding, or improving schoolyard habitats. Teachers and students designed, built, and planted these habitats in the spring of 2013 with help from Master Gardeners, Virginia Master Naturalists, and the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. Major support came from DGIF and the Virginia Environmental Endowment. All ten schools have received certification as DGIF Habitat Partners(c), and many are also now registered as Monarch Way-stations. For more information, visit the VCE-York/Poquoson website.
