MEET YOUR DIRECTOR

Beth Stone is a native Virginian and was educated in the York County School Division of

Yorktown, Virginia.  A graduate of York High School where she was a member of the
symphonic band, drum major of the Falcon Marching Band, tenor saxophonist
in the jazz band, musical orchestra member, musical cast member and a Virginia All State Band clarinetist.

While attending the University of South Carolina School of Music she performed in the wind ensemble,
Swing Shift Jazz Band, chamber ensembles and marching band, "The Mighty Sound of the Southeast!".
She studied clarinet with R. Doug Graham. After earning her Bachelor of

Music in Music Education, Cum Laude, Beth did a semester of graduate
studies while performing as a clarinetist with the Palmetto Concert Band.  

She returned home to Virginia to begin her teaching career. Her first position was as
the assistant director at Poquoson Middle School in Poquoson, Virginia.

  
In 2000, Beth was hired by the York County Schools as the band director for Grafton Middle
School
in Yorktown, VirginiaUnder her direction the program has grown 55% in size
while
the school’s total enrollment has remained steadily the same. More than a third of the
school’s population participates in the middle school band. 
The middle school
intermediate and advanced bands perform grade three and
four level music and consistently earn
superior and excellent ratings. 
The band programs at Grafton Middle and Grafton High employ four
band directors and have over 500 participating students. 
   

Beth is currently enrolled as a summer graduate student at the VanderCook College of Music in Chicago, Illinois.
She is a clarinetist with the Virginia Wind Symphony and a member of 
the Virginia Music Educators Association, Virginia Band
and Orchestra Directors' Association
, Music Educators National Conference,
Phi Kappa Lambda Music Honor Society and Delta Omicron International Music Fraternity. 
She has served as a guest conductor for the Chesapeake Bay Wind Ensemble,
the Newport News All City Band, the Chesapeake All City Band 
and the Gloucester/Northern Neck Area Band.

   

Beth's hobbies include scrapbooking, gardening, stained glass and playing Nintendo DS.
She lives with her husband, Gabe, their cat,
Pierre, their parakeet, Tacet and their ever increasing school of guppies.
