Name: Youth Conservation Corps 2008

Who is Eligible: 14-17 year olds (high school students)

Description: The primary purpose of the Virginia State Parks Youth Conservation Corps is twofold: 1)it is aimed at youth development, and 2)it is a cost-effective way to raise environmental awareness and strengthen stewardship of Virginia’s valuable natural resources. In essence, the program combines work experience, education and life skills development within the framework of environmental and community service.

Name: Introduction to Engineering 2008

Who is Eligible: Rising Juniors & Rising Seniors (women and minorities strongly encouraged)

Description: The program is structured to maximize the student’s stay at the university. The program format includes daily participation in introductory engineering course work, seminars on college admissions and financial aid, demonstrations, experiments and departmental and university tours. Faculty members and graduate students from various departments give lectures and answer questions relating to studies and careers in the different engineering disciplines.

*The Sharpe Community Scholars program at the College of William and Mary invites every entering student to apply for the opportunity to engage in service-learning, selecting approximately 75 freshmen to enroll in courses specifically designed to engage in community activism, research, or service.  Our hope is to make this opportunity as widely available to students as possible.  This program is for students who have already been accepted as part of the 2008-2009 freshman class at William and Mary.

* 9th- 12th grade students.  Be a citizen of the
United States or a legal alien. Have completed five years of elementary education or be 11-27 years of age.  Be enrolled in or have dropped out of any grade from sixth through twelfth and have the potential for post-secondary education.

*Academic, college, career and personal counseling.  Free college, cultural and business tours.  Free tutoring.  Workshops and seminars on the college application process.  Assistance with completing financial aid forms.  SAT I & II, college application and ACT fee waivers to eligible participants.  Workshops and computer assistance on SAT and GED preparation.  Other individualized services are also available to the ETS client. ETS serves 900 clients annually. Two-thirds (600) of all ETS clients must be low-income (according to federal guidelines) and potential first generation college graduates (neither parent has a four year degree).  Participants are recruited from a target area that includes the cities of Hampton , Newport News , Williamsburg , Suffolk , Poquoson, and the counties of Isle of Wight , York Gloucester and James City . Clients are recruited from area schools and via community agencies.
