Countdown to College Checklist
Freshman Year:
-Examine your own likes, dislikes, interests and activities.
-Begin informal resume with your activities, clubs and volunteer work.
-Visit colleges whenever possible and explore colleges on the web.
<-Complete a 4 year plan with your guidance counselor with college and a career in mind.
-Remember that your final grades for 9th-12th grade are on the official transcript. Every grade counts.
-Commit to several activities throughout your high school years.
Sophomore Year:
-Sign up at your high school to take the October PSAT.
-Review PSAT results
-Take the most challenging academic courses that are appropriate for your ability and interests.
-Continue exploring colleges on the web.
-Update your activities resume.
-Concentrate on academic performance.
-Continue volunteer, extracurricular and summer commitments.
-Begin to discuss college financing with your parents.
-Think about jobs your parents and other adults you know have. Ask them what a typical workday is like. Does this sound interesting to you?
Junior Year:
-Remember that this is the last full year of grades that will appear on your transcript that is sent to colleges. Make them your best yet!
-Sign up at your high school for the October PSAT. This will establish your eligibility for the National Merit Scholarship competition, the National Achievement Scholarship Program for Outstanding Negro Students, and the National Hispanic Scholar Awards Program.
-Plan to take the SAT I and SAT II during your junior year.
-Research colleges online and visit whenever possible. Would you buy a car unseen? Probably not. Therefore, it is important that you see first hand the colleges you are planning on applying to!
-If your are interested in a military academy or a ROTC scholarship, begin the application process in late spring of this year.
-Attend College Night at Hampton University.
-Apply for a summer job or look for an interesting summer experience.
-Summer: write to the colleges you are applying to for applications, financial aid and scholarship information. By the time you return to school in the fall, you should have all of the applications you need!
Senior Year:
- Register for SAT I, SAT II, or ACT as needed.
- (Go to www.collegeboard.com to register on line)
-Sign up in guidance to meet with college representatives.
- (Sign up book is located on the counter in the guidance office)
-Meet with your guidance counselor to make sure that your coursework meets graduation requirements. Also, discuss post-secondary plans.
-Ask 2 teachers for letters of recommendations.
-Attend the College Fair at Hampton University.
-Update your activities resume.
-Most students apply to 3-5 colleges. Make sure you select 1 or 2 sure bets and not all outside chance schools. Be realistic about your high school transcript.
Go for that dream school..but don't leave yourself without other options!
-If requesting Early Action or Early Decision college admission, be sure to submit application materials by the deadline.
-Be aware of admission and financial aid application deadlines and meet them. Do not procrastinate! Keep accurate record of all applications and supporting materials you submit to colleges.
-Be aware of scholarship deadlines. Devote time, energy and thought to writing and re-writing required essays.
-Listen to school announcements and read Senior Newsletters regarding scholarships.
-After January 1st, 2006, your parents should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). These will be available in the guidance office around
December 1st.
-Attend in January the Financial Aid Workshop sponsored by YCS.
-Mid February, first semester grades are sent to the colleges you have applied to by the guidance office. Continue same level of effort and commitment to academics as you have in prior years!
-Early spring, start checking your mail. College decisions should be arriving.
-Reply promptly to colleges informing them of your decision to accept admission or not.
-Provide guidance with copies of both your college acceptances and scholarship award letters.
-Final grades are sent to the college- admission is provisional, pending these! You must provide guidance with the name of the college you will be attending so that we can mail this to them.
-GRADUATION! Boy have you earned this!
