Grants
PenCTM awards annual mini-grants of up to $250 each for elementary, middle, and high school projects that will positively affect math education in the region. We are pleased to announce the winner of the 2008 Mini-Grant:
- Merita Frazier, Lindsay Middle School
- Mrs. Frazier and her colleagues plan to implement a program to help their students build better organizational and study skills. Personal organization at the classroom- and subject-level should allow their students more time on task with fewer disruptions and less frustration with lost materials. Their program integrates interactive notebook activities, daily notes, homework, SOL questions, and graded assignments. It is their hope that such structure in the academic environment will also carry over into other areas of their students’ lives, increasing success all around.
Student Awards
At the annual banquent in May, PenCTM recognizes students who have achieved outstanding levels of performance in mathematics in a variety of venues. Examples of excellence include perfect scores on the SAT math exam, individual or team honors in VA Math League, AIME, AMC 8/10/12 and CNU Math contests, Math Counts, the John Hopkins Talent Search, the Great Computer Challenge, and the like.
Scholarships
PenCTM is elated to recognize two area seniors with $500 scholarships.
- Alex Chen from York High School, planning to attend Stanford or Harvard University, studying mathematics and science.
- Cameron Shelton from Poquoson High School, who plans to attend the University of Virginia, studying engineering.
Through our membership dues, we are able to celebrate the achievements of such students each year.
Our very best wishes to Alex, Cameron, and all of our scholarship applicants in their future studies!
Scholarship information is available in the Feb Newsletter each year.
