Grades and Promotions
GRADING SCALE/CLASS RANK
Grading Scale–Courses taught in York County high schools are assigned grade-point values as follows:
A 92-100 4 points
B 84-91 3 points
C 75-83 2 points
D 67-74 1 point
F 66 and below 0 points
Class Rank
High school class rank within the York
County School Division is based upon the grades earned in
courses for which high school credit is awarded. The Grade
Point Average (GPA) for students earning non-weighted and/or
weighted credit is calculated following a prescribed formula and
established procedure (in the Student Handbook ).
Promotion–
High school students are promoted based upon achievement
reflected in the number of credits earned (Grade 10/minimum
of 5 credits; Grade 11/minimum of 10 credits; Grade 12/
minimum of 15 credits).
CREDIT/COURSE INFORMATION
Transfer Credits–Transfer grades and credits from other
school divisions will be accepted by the York County School
Division provided the courses are compatible with local and state regulations. Weighted credits will be awarded to only
those transfer courses which are also weighted in the York
County School Division. and will be computed according to the York County formula.

Graduation: Diplomas and Certificates
The requirements for a student to earn a diploma from a Virginia high school are the requirements that are in effect when that student enters the ninth grade for the first time. Students may be awarded a diploma or a certificate upon graduation from a
Virginia high school. Specific graduation requirements are shown on page 5. NOTE: Graduation and course requirements
listed are subject to change due to possible modifications instate requirements.
l Advanced Studies DiplomaTo earn an Advanced Studies Diploma (24-credit) in the York County School Division, a student must successfully complete the following Standard Units of Credit:
- English/4
- History & Social Science/4
- Mathematics/4
- Laboratory Science/4
- Foreign Language/3
- Health & PE/2
- Fine or Practical Arts/1
- Electives/2.
Students entering 9th grade for the first time in 2000-2001 must earn 9 Verified Credits.
l Standard Diploma. To earn a Standard Diploma (22-credit) in the York County School Division, a student must successfully complete the following Standard Units of Credit:
- English/4
- History & Social Science/4
- Mathematics/3
- Laboratory Science/3
- Health & PE/2
- Fine or Practical Arts/1
- Electives/5.
Beginning with the graduating Class of 2003, credits must include at least two sequential electives. Students entering 9th grade for the first time in 2000-2001 must earn 6 Verified Credits.
l Modified Standard Diploma. Eligibility for the Modified Standard Diploma is determined by the student's Individual Education Program (IEP). To earn a Modified Standard Diploma (20-credit) in the York County School Division, an eligible student must successfully complete the following
