Box Score

Daily Press Article

Grafton earned their third straight trip to the state tournament and regional final appearance with a big win over Spotsylvania in a Region 1 semifinal contest. The Clippers did all the damage with a big 6-run 3rd inning. Cody Wheeler (Spotsylvania pitcher) struggled with his control early and walked the bases loaded. David Poutier hit a sac fly to left to tie the game. Nate Mitchell then walked to load the bases again. Sam Hawkins popped up to the centerfielder for the 1st out and set the stage for the play of the game. With 2 strikes, Ryan Maxwell hit a "squibber" off the end of the bat in between the mound and 1st base for an infield single which scored Ryan Wagner. Nate Mitchell got caught in a rundown between 2nd & 3rd which allowed Patrick Bergman (courtesy-runner for Jeff Clark) to score. Mitchell was safe at third when the 3rd baseman dropped the ball on the tag and Ryan Maxwell was safe at 2nd as he advanced during the rundown as well. Maxwell's advance was big as Nick Schmidt then hit a big-time ground rule double which cleared the bases. He then scored on Kyle Messick's rbi single to right to finish the scoring. David Poutier was a warrior on the hill as whe pitched all 7 innings striking out 7 hitters and only walking 2. Grafton earned the right to defend their Region 1 title and now travel to Powhatan (7-4 winners over Chancellor) on Friday. Game time is 6:30pm.

Then, after David Poutier reached by an error and Nathan Mitchell walked to load the bases, Sam Hawkins drove home two runs with a single up the middle and Ryan Maxwell also added a single to left to drive home Mitchell and Hawkins. Kyle Pelchy pitched four solid innings to earn the win. Seth Frisby and Greg Tillman also helped as they pitched the 5th through 7th innings. Grafton earned some breathing room with a big 4-run inning in the 5th. Ryan Maxwell singled with 1 out and moved up to 2nd on a groundout by Nick Schmidt. With 2 outs, Kyle Messick walked and Anthony Maldonado bunted for an infield hit to load the bases. Ryan Wagner then doubled to right-center to clear the bases. Poquoson took advantage of three critical Grafton errors and held on to beat Grafton yesterday 4-3. David Poutier threw one of his best games striking out 10 and only walking 1 Islander hitter while going the distance, but it was not enough. Poquoson scored 3 decisive runs in the 3rd inning. With two on and two out, Rick Hoogstratten hit a liner to left field that Sam Hawkins seemingly had a beat on, but it got past him clearing the bases. Rick Bollinger then hit a rbi single to plate the 3rd run. Grafton scored one run in the 4th and rallied in the 7th loading the bases with no one out. But Dion Wilder hit into a critical double-play to snuff the rally. Grafton could only come up with 2 runs in the final inning. This win, coupled with Tabb's loss on Tuesday, moves Grafton into sole possession of 1st place in the district standings with two games to play. Grafton's next game is at home versus York. This is their last regular season home game and there will be senior day presentations beginning at 4:15pm.

05.08.06 - Grafton Cruises Past New Kent!

Box Score
Play-by-Play

Grafton rolled to a 10-0 victory over visiting New Kent this past Friday. Nate Mitchell led the Clipper's offensive attack with two home runs and 4 rbis and Seth Frisby earned his 4th win of the year. 05.03.06 - Grafton Wins in Extra Innings!

Box Score
Play-by-Play

Grafton broke open a close game by scoring 5 runs in the 10th inning yesterday and went on to beat Jamestown 6-2. Jesse Ferrell of J'town and the combination of David Poutier & Greg Tillman of Grafton threw brilliantly as they kept each other's opponents scoreless through 8 innings. Grafton finally broke through in the 9th as Ryan Maxwell doubled down the left field line to score pinch-runner Kyle Hornsby from 2nd. Jamestown would score a run in the bottom half of the inning to force a 10th. That's when Grafton got to the Eagles bullpen and scored 5 runs including Ryan Wagner's tie breaking single that plated Nick Schmidt with the go ahead run and Nate Mitchell's big 3-run home run that put the game out of reach. Grafton kept pace with Tabb and is still tied for 1st place with 4 games remaining. Grafton hosts New Kent on Friday. Game time is 4:30pm.

05.01.06 - The Race is On!

Box Score
Play-by-Play

Grafton beat Tabb 5-3 in what was probably the biggest regular season win for the Clippers in years. Out of 1st place by one game and playing without their best player, David Poutier due to complications from a spider bite, the Clippers rallied to stifle Tabb's potent offense and scrape just enough runs of their own to beat the 1st place team and create a logjam at the top of the Bay Rivers District standings. Tabb and Grafton are now tied for 1st place with Lafayette only 1/2 game behind. Seth Frisby was the hero of the day as he pitched a gritty 7 innings allowing only 3 runs by scattering 5 hits and 5 walks. He pitched out of jams in both the 3rd and 7th innings. Jeff Clark was 2 for 3 with a home run and Nick Schmidt also had 2 hits to lead the offense. The district title chase is now a 5 game race. Grafton will try to do their part beginning with a road trip to Jamestown on Tuesday. Game time is 4:30pm.

04.28.06 - Grafton Snaps Out of It....Beats Southampton!

Box Score
Play-by-Play

A helpless Southampton squad was just what the doctor ordered. Having lost it's last three games, Grafton needed a win heading into the big rematch with Tabb and rollded to a 13-6 win. This win, coupled with Tabb's loss to Poquoson, allowed the Clippers to gain a game in the standings and they will go into Saturday's rematch with Tabb 1 game out of first place. Game time is 2:00pm.

04.26.06 - Grafton Continues Slide...Loses to Bruton!

Box Score
Play-by-Play
