Nick Boothe Fall Baseball Academy is in its 12th year of existence. The academy is an excellent opportunity for individuals to increase their baseball skills and knowledge during the fall baseball season. Press Article Grafton played an amazingly gritty and never-say-die game in the state quarterfinals versus Monticello, but in the end the Mustangs from Charlottesville proved to be too strong. Press Article Grafton has won the Region 1 title for the second year in a row. Fianl score was Grafton 4, Tabb 3. John Bayse kept the Clippers close with 4 solid innings pitched and Justin Wright pitched the final 3 for the win. Jeff Clark had a big run scoring double in the first and Kyle Messick had a run game-winning double in the 5th to score pinch-runner Kyle Pelchy from first with the go ahead run. 06.01.05 - Back to Back Baby! Press Article Grafton is going back to the the state tournament! The Clippers earned back to back trips to the state tournament for the first time in school history today with a come from behind 5-4 win over Lafayette. Down 4-1 entering the bottom of the 6th inning, Justin Harrah cranked a 3-run home run to tie the game at 4 apiece. Grafton then wiggled out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the 7th to set the stage for the win. With one out and David Poutier at 1st, Justin Wright screamed a line drive to the right field fence which allowed Poutier to score from 1st ending the game and Lafayette's season. Grafton will now play for the Region 1 Championship at home against another familiar foe, Tabb, on Friday. Game time is 4:00pm. 05.30.05 - Grafton Beats Courtland in Opening Game of Region 1 Tourny! Press Article Justin Wright pitched a strong seven innings and the defense played well as the Clippers beat Courtland 4-1 in the opening game of the Region 1 tourny. Justin Harrah led the Clipper offense with two hits and Will Campbell had one. Follow the links above for more info! Grafton advances on to face a familiar foe, Lafayette, on Wednesday. The winner advances to the state tournament. Game time is 4:00pm at GHS. 05.27.05 - Grafton Hosts Courtland in Regional 1 Tournament Game. As regular season champions, Grafton won the right to host the first game of the Region 1 tournament. Press Article 46 hours later Grafton and Tabb resumed their rain-shortened contest from Tuesday. But 5 first innings runs proved too large of a deficit to overcome as Tabb won in 8 innings. Grafton tied it in the bottom of the 7th and looked as though they were going to win it. Nick Johansen seemingly scored the winning run by sliding around the tag at home plate but the umpire thought otherwise and the game continued into the 8th where Tabb scored two crucial runs and finally held on. Tabb will play Lafayette (8-1 winner over New Kent) for the district tournament title Friday at 5pm. Follow the links above to read more. 05.23.05 - Six Clippers Make All-District! Six Clipper baseball players were named to the Bay Rivers District All-District teams including Justin Wright who was named the District Player of the Year! Box Score Grafton beat New Kent today 15-5. This win, coupled with Lafayette's loss to Jamestown, has resulted in a 1st place tie with no regular season games remaining and forces a playoff game to determine the regular season Bay Rivers District champion. Box Score Grafton went 2-1 last week to run their district record to 13-4 (13-6 overall), They lost to Tabb but beat Southampton and Poquoson. The loss dampened the hopes of repeating as district champs but Lafayette (14-3 record) lost as well to Poquoson so there is still some hope. It all comes down to the wire tomorrow (5/17). Lafayette plays at Jamestown while Grafton visits New Kent in the regular season finale for both teams. A Lafayette win or Grafton loss will allow Lafayette to claim the regular season Bay Rivers District title....stay tuned! 05.03.05 - Grafton Keeps District Title Hopes Alive...Beats Lafayette 4-2! Box ScoreSummary In a must win situation, Grafton rode the arm of David Poutier to beat Lafayette 4-2 and keep their district championship hopes alive. Down by two games (in the standings) to Lafayette with 5 to play, the Clippers could ill-afford another loss. Instead, today's big win puts them 1 game behind with only 4 games left to play. David Poutier gave up only 4 hits, struck out 5, and walked 3 to earn his 3rd win of the year. And his teammates picked up the slack behind him with a solid defensive game. Adam Shelton had two hits, Justin Wright had a big double, Kyle Messick had a big 2-out rbi hit, and Will Campbell & Nick Johansen each had a hit to lead the Grafton offense. The Clipper's record now stands at 11-5 overall & 11-3 in district play. Next game is Friday at 4:30pm at Southampton. 04.28.05 - Grafton Overwhelms York 15-4! Box ScoreSummary David Poutier pitched 6 strong innings and recorded his 2nd win of the year to lead the Clippers past the visiting Panthers of Bruton. Poutier also had two hits along with Jeff Clark, Adam Shelton, and Will Campbell to lead the Clipper's 10-hit attack. Grafton returns to action soon....this Saturday at 2pm at York! 04.26.05 - Jamestown Beats Grafton 4-2! Box ScoreSummary Randy Suders led Jamestown to a tough win over the homestanding Clippers. He pitched a complete game holding the Clippers down to only 2 runs on 6 hits. He also had the big blow of the game...a grand slam in the 3rd inning to give his team the only runs they would need to hand Grafton it's first home loss in two years. David Poutier had two hits while Kyle Messick, Justin Wright, Nate Mitchell, and Adam Shelton had the other hits for the Clippers. Grafton will look to rebound on Thursday at home against Bruton...game time is 4:30pm. 04.22.05 - Grafton Blanks Smithfield! Box ScoreSummary David Poutier pitched 5 strong innings and recorded his 1st win of the year to lead the Clippers past the Packers. David struck out 8 batters, walked 1, and surrendered only 4 hits. Justin Wright pitched the 6th and final inning. Justin Wright, Jeff Clark, and Will Campbell all had multiple hit games as the Clippers pounded out a total of 14 hits on the day. Grafton is now 8-4 overall and 8-2 in district play...still one game behind district leader Lafayette. Next game: @ home vs. Jamestown on Tuesday. 04.19.05 - Grafton Blanks New Kent! Freshman John Bayse pitched 6 strong innings and recorded his 3rd win of the year to lead the Clippers past a stingy New Kent team. John struck out 6 batters while walking only 1 and surrendering only 1 hit to up his record to 3-0. Nate Mitchell had two hits including a double and Kyle Messick had a double and 2 rbis to help lead the offensive attack. Click here to read more. The Clippers begin the 2nd half of the Bay Rivers District chase in sole possession of 2nd place with a 7-2 record...one game behind district leader Lafayette who is 8-1. Next game: Friday @ Smithfield. 04.16.05 - Poquoson Shuts Down Clippers! Nate Duman relieved Jake Bollinger with 1 out, runners on 1st and 2nd, in the 1st inning and proceeeded to hold Grafton hitless until the 6th. Justin Harrah got Grafton's 1st hit scoring Justin Wright from 2nd base to plate their only run. Kyle Messick led off the 7th inning with Grafton's only other hit. Justin Harrah pitched well in his own right but a 3-run 1st was all the Islanders needed behind and excellent pitching and defensive performance by Poquoson on a very windy day. Final score was Poquoson 3, Grafton 1. Grafton and Poquoson are presently tied for 2nd place in the BRD standings with 6-2 records each and both are 1 game behind 1st place Lafayette. Click here to read the game summary. 04.14.05 - Grafton Rallies Past Tabb 7-4! Down 4-0 in the 5th, Grafton struck for 4 runs behind a big 2 run double by Will Campbell to tie the game. The next inning Justin Wright hit his 4th home run of the year, a 2-run shot, to help seal the big comeback win for the homestanding Clippers. Justin Wright earned his 2nd win of the year pitching 6 innings...David Poutier pitched the 7th to finish the game. 04.12.05 - Grafton Gets Past Southampton 9-5! Justin Harrah pitched 5 solid innings to record his 2nd win of the year and also went 3 for 3 with 3 doubles and 2 rbi's to lead the Clippers past the Indians. Justin Wright also chipped in a 3-run home run (his 3rd of the season), Nate Mitchell had two hits and an rbi, Kyle Messick had a hit and an rbi, and Dylan Gwaltney had a hit and an rbi. Ryan Maxwell and Nick Schmidt also played well defensively for the Clippers. The next game is a big one...Tabb at home on Thursday, 04.14.05. Game time is at 4:30pm. 04.08.05 - Lafayette Edges Grafton in 8 Innings! Grafton fell out of the ranks of the unbeatens in district play tonite. Lafayette used some clutch hitting and just enough pitching and defense to win the game in 8 innings by a score of 5-4. The Clippers were left playing the "what if" game after leaving 15 runners on base. Justin Wright pitched well limiting Lafayette to 4 hits and 2 runs through 5 innings. David Poutier absorbed his 2nd loss of the year in relief of Wright. David Poutier, Jeff Clark, and Justin Wright each had two hits and a double apiece. Justin had 2 rbi's as well. Will Campbell, Justin Harrah, Kyle Messick, and Nate Mitchell had a hit apiece as well. Grafton will try to resume their winning ways again on Tuesday, 04.12.05 with a home game vs. Southampton. Game time is 4:30pm. 04.05.05 - Grafton Pounds York 10-0! Grafton scored 9 runs in the first two innings and cruised to a 10-0 win in 5 innings. Justin Harrah earned his first win of the year pitching 4 scoreless innings and David Poutier pitched the 5th and final inning. Nate Mitchell and Jeff Clark each hit home runs to lead the Clippers. Will Campbell also had a double. The win sets up an early season matchup of league leaders on Friday. Grafton plays at Lafayette who is also off to a 4-0 district start. Game time is 4:30pm at Mid-County Park in W'burg. 04.04.05 - Grafton Cruises to 7-3 Win Over Bruton! Freshman John Bayse pitched 5 shutout innings to earn his 2nd win of the year and David Poutier led Grafton with 3 hits, Will Campbell had two hits including a double and an rbi and Justin Wright hit a 2-run homer to help Grafton rebound from a disappointing DH loss over Spring Break. The Clippers return home on Tuesday to face York. Game time is 4:30pm. 03.31.05 - Spotsylvania Takes Two! Fellow Region 1 school Spotsylvania County proved it could not only hang with the defending Region 1 champs, but beat 'em! Spotsy broke open a close game late with 4 runs in the 6th inning and won the 1st game 8-5. Then they completed a sweep of the double-header with a 5-4 extra-inning win in the 2nd game. Spotsy used a combination of good hitting, aggressive baserunning, and just enough pitching to send the Clippers on a long bus ride home. Justin Wright absorbed the loss in relief of starter John Bayse in the 1st game. David Poutier got the loss in the 2nd game after relieving Justin Harrah in the 6th inning. Nate Mitchell had two hits on the day and Justin Wright also chipped in a double. The Clippers will look to resume their winning ways next Monday at Bruton. Game time is 4:30pm. 03.22.05 - Grafton Continues Powerful Start...Beats Jamestown 10-2! Grafton continued to hit the ball well and took advantage of 10 walks by Jamestown pitching to win a pivotal early season game. Justin Wright and David Poutier, however, combined to limit the Eagles to 4 hits, 3 walks, and 2 runs. Wright earned his 1st win of the year. The Clippers took and early 1-0 lead in the 1st as Justin Wright sent a pitch into orbit. The solo shot was Justin's first of the year. In the 2nd, Grafton scored 4 more. Nate Mitchell led off with a walk, stole 2nd, and advanced to 3rd on a swinging bunt by Nick Johansen. With 2 out, David Poutier drew a walk putting runners on the corners. Jeff Clark then went opposite field into the gap and scored both Mitchell and Poutier. Wright was HBP and both he and Clark advanced a base each on a balk. Justin Harrah then doubled in the left-center gap to score two more. Jamestown pulled within 5-2 in the 3rd inning when their SS hit a 2-run homer to left. In the top of the 5th, Grafton responded with lead-off double by Campbell, Messick drew a walk, Mitchell moved them each up a base with a sac bunt, pinch hitter Nick Schmidt drew another walk, and Nick Johansen hit a single to left scoring two more runs. Johansen and Schmidt both executed a double steal to get a 3rd run. Grafton got two more in the 6th on 3 more walks and a 2-run single by Nate Mitchell. David Poutier then shut the door in the 5th and 6th innings to seal the win. Grafton returns to action on Friday, 03.25.05, at Bruton. Game time is 4pm. 03.18.05 - Big Inning Propels Grafton Past Smithfield! Grafton used a 9-run 3rd inning to take control of the game and cruised to a 13-3 win over the Smithfield Packers. The Clippers were down 3-0 entering the 3rd inning and Smithfield had their ace pitcher Tabb Griffey on the hill. David Poutier and Jeff Clark led off the 3rd with back-to-back walks and then Justin Wright got us on the scoreboard with a run scoring single up the middle. Justin Harrah and Will Campbell then drew a second pair of back-to-back walks to pull us within 1. Smithfield then changed pitchers bringing in a right-handed curveballer. He promptly strikes out Nate Mitchell. But, with one out, Kyle Messick, Dylan Gwaltney, and Nick Johansen all hit singles to plate 4 runs and putting us ahead 7-3. The top of the order begins hitting again with Poutier reaching 1st on an error by the 3rd baseman. He then promptly steals second and puts runners on 2nd & 3rd. Jeff Clark then hits a sac fly to left scoring Johansen from 3rd and Poutier moves up to 3rd when Smithfield neglects to cover the bag. Justin Wright then finishes the scoring when he hits a hard shot past the 1st baseman scoring Poutier. Justin Harrah hit a solo shot in the 4th inning to put us up 10-3. We score 3 in the 5th to finish the game with Nate Mitchell's 2 run double being the big blow. John Bayse got the final out in the 3rd inning and the freshman records the first varsity win of his career! The Clippers return to action on Tuesday, 03.22.05, at Jamestown. The 1st pitch is scheduled to be thrown at 4:00pm. 03.14.05 - Grafton Beats Menchville! Grafton used the long-ball and good pitching again to come out on top of Menchville and win their 2nd scrimmage by a score of 6-4. Justin Wright had a 3-run dinger and Kyle Messick hit a 2-run bomb in the 1st inning to stake the Clippers with an early 5-0 lead. Grafton's only other run came in the 4th inning when Jeff Clark led off with a single up the middle. After a Justin Wright fly-out, Clark stole 2nd base. Justin Harrah then popped-out. Will Campbell then came through with a 2-out hit to plate Clark. Justin Wright, Justin Harrah, John Bayse, Nick Schmidt, & Kyle Messick all pitched well and helped hold Menchville to 4 runs (Only 1 earned) on 3 hits. Grafton opens its season on Friday at home versus Smithfield. Game time is 4pm! 03.12.05 - Grafton Scrimmages Gloucester! Grafton opened it's season yesterday with a 9-4 win in a scrimmage versus Gloucester. The pitching staff looked good in giving up only 1 run and 4 hits through 8 innings. Justin Harrah, Justin Wright, John Bayse, and David Poutier each through 2 innings a piece during this stretch. Gloucester got to Kyle Messick a bit in the 9th inning when they scored 3 runs off of 3 hits and a walk. Justin Wright, David Poutier, & Will Campbell led the way hitting...David was 1-2 with a walk, 2 SB's, and 2 runs scored. Justin Wright was 3-3 with a double and 1 RBI. Will Campbell was 2-2 with a walk, a double, and 3 RBI's. Adam Shelton, Dylan Gwaltney, Kyle Messick, Nate Mitchell, Nick Johansen, and Nick Schmidt each had a hit apiece as the Clippers pounded out a total of 12 hits. Grafton returns to action in a 2nd scrimmage vs. Menchville at home on Monday, March 14th at 3:30pm. 03.08.05 - Former Pitcher Continues to Impress! Due to the success of the Fuddruckers fundraiser the donut sale has been cancelled. The next two dates of our Fuddrucker's Benefit Night are 01.25.05 and 02.02.05. 12.20.04 - W & M Team Hitting Camp! If you want to go to the W&M team hitting camp with us, then please plan on turning in the entire $125 camp fee to Mr. Kirby by 01.03.05. Make the check payable to Williamsburg Baseball Academy. The camp meets on the dates of Jan.10,17, 24 and 31 from 7:30-9:00pm and the W&M coaching staff will be running it. This camp is open to any baseball player but space is limited to the first 20 campers who get their fee submitted. Any questions call Coach Hammons at 887-5033. 11.01.04 - Off-Season Conditioning Begins Anyone interested in playing baseball this Spring, and are not involved in a GHS seasonal sport, are encouraged to attend our conditioning/weightlifting sessions. We meet Monday, Wednesday, & Friday afternoons at 2:00pm in the weight room. We will NOT meet over Thanksgiving & Christmas breaks. University. The senior infielder/pitcher selected VCU over a host of
other schools. He said he chose them because "I will have an
opportunity to play/start as a freshman and I thought it would be great
play college ball in a professional park!" VCU plays all their home
games at "The Diamond" in Richmond...home of the AAA Richmond Braves. (Click here to
