Selection
week for the Golf team begins on Wednesday, August 2 at the Kiln Creek Golf
Club. Tee times begin at
Sports Physicals: You must have a Virginia High School League (VHSL) sports physical completed and on file with the Athletic Director prior to trying out. You will not be allowed to tryout without one. Turn in your sports physical to the CLINIC or ATHLETIC DIRECTOR if you have recently had it done but not turned it in yet! Blank physicals are located in the main and athletic director’s offices.
Proper Attire: Students must observe the dress code for Kiln Creek Golf Club at all times! Parents and/or students should contact the club at 874-2600 for specific information. In no case will denim shorts, jeans, cargo shorts, cutoffs, or tank tops be allowed. A collared shirt and soft spike shoes are required at all golf courses we play at during the season.
Equipment: You must provide your own golf clubs. Students are required to walk and carry their own clubs and may not use a powered cart, pull cart, or caddy.
Weather: The weather during golf season is extremely hot and humid and some precautions must be taken to ensure safety. With high temps and humidity, I urge students to carry a water bottle and drink plenty of fluids during play. It is also a good idea to lighten the weight of golf bags by removing unnecessary items.
Decisions: will be made on players after the Friday, Aug. 4th tryout. Tryouts will consist of 3 rounds of play of 18 holes each. Only players who make the cut after the 3rd round should continue to show. This is also weather dependent. If a storm causes us to suspend play, then tryouts may consist of shorter rounds or maybe even a smaller number of rounds.
Evaluations & Criteria: The final team of twelve players will be selected based on playing ability and the criteria for making the team is simple. The 12 players who have shot the lowest total scores after 3 rounds of play will make the team. Each player is responsible for their hole by hole score. Once a score card is signed and turned in to the coach that score is final. Golf is a gentlemen’s game and your honor and integrity are most important. Any player caught cheating will be immediately disqualified from tryouts and will not make this team.
To speed up play we will use the double-par rule for tryouts only. Once a player has recorded twice the number of strokes over par for any hole they will they will pick up their ball, record the double-par, and move on to the next hole. The maximum scores to be recorded are 6 on a par 3, 8 on a par 4, and 10 on a par 5.
Spectators: During play, spectators will not be allowed to walk or talk with the players. The players can only request information from the players in their own foursome, the coach, or the Kiln Creek Staff.
Recommendations: I recommend players try to play the Kiln Creek Golf Course during the weeks leading up to tryouts. Also, I recommend players become familiar, as much as possible, with the rules of golf.
Rules & Notes:
-Virginia High School League rules state players must have at least 5 passing spring semester grades taken in order to be academically eligible to play a fall sport such as golf. Poor academic performance and/or poor citizenship will prevent a player from being selected to this team!
- We will be practicing and playing on Mondays through Thursdays. See schedule below. Parents, Guardians, and players should plan appropriately but the schedule is subject to change.
- After the tryouts, there will be a meeting for players, parents, and/or guardians. Time is TBA.
