ParaPro Assessment Testing
The No Child Left Behind Act requires that Para-educators meet one of the following:
- At least 2 years of study at an accredited institution of higher education (minimum 48 semester credit hours);
- An associates degree or higher; or,
- Have met a rigorous standard of quality and can demonstrate, through a local or formal state assessment, knowledge of and the ability to assist in instructing reading, writing and mathematics.
Virginia uses the ParaPro Assessment to meet option C.
The School Board practice in the York County School Division is to apply these standards to all Para-Educators for the school year beginning September 6, 2005. Therefore, all new hires for Para-Educator positions MUST meet this requirement prior to employment.
The ParaPro Assessment is a 2-1/2 hour computerized test consisting of 90 questions across the subject areas of reading, mathematics, and writing. Test fee of $45 is payable by the test taker on the day of the test in the form of EXACT change cash or money order (no personal checks or credit cards will be accepted).
ParaPro Assessment Testing is offered in the Lifelong Learning Center computer Lab.
