About Myself
This is Mrs. Martin – your new Music Teacher.  I am not exactly new because I taught Music here from 1984 – 1996.  My good Friend, Mrs. Spruill, moved to Tabb Middle School and I was given the opportunity to return to Bethel Manor.  I am delighted to be here!  I would like to give you an overview of the school year in Music.

Our Current Focus: School Song--All Grade Level

Kindergarten
The students will be exploring Music learning basic rhythm and melody concepts.  The Kindergarten students will learn many songs, play percussion instruments, and move to Music.  These students will present a program called “A – Z Does It” on Thursday, May 22, 2008 at 7:00 p. m. For the program, the students will need to wear a short-sleeved white collared shirt (polo shirt or dress shirt), blue jeans or pants, and comfortable shoes.
1st Grade
These students will continue their study of many aspects of Music – rhythm, melody, harmony, and expressive qualities.  The First grade students will build on their knowledge of Music.  They will present a program entitled “Proud To Be American” on Thursday, April 24 at 7:00 p. m.  The students will need to wear blue jeans or pants and shirts as listed below:
Mrs. Cernigliaro’s Class – red
Ms. Churchill’s Class – white
Mrs.
England’s Class – blue
Mrs. Gaspard’s Class – white
Mrs. Murden’s Class - red
2nd Grade
The Second Graders will be introduced to their Music textbooks.  They will improve their reading skills by learning to read the words to songs on a staff.  They will be playing many percussion instruments and reading rhythm lines.  These students performed in a holiday program, “December In Our Town”, on Thursday, December 13 at 7:00 p. m.  They were terrific and put everyone in the holiday spirit!
3rd Grade
The Third graders will continue working in Music books.  This will reinforce the reading concepts they are learning in the classroom. They will explore all Musical concepts and play recorders, a flute-like instrument to aid in Music reading.  The students will be playing the recorders from January through May.  Recorders may be purchased from the school for $5.00.  This includes a recorder, zippered case, cleaning stick, neck strap, and fingering chart.  It is a real bargain!  These students appeared in the holiday program with the Second Graders and were outstanding!
4th Grade
In the Fourth grade, the students build on musical skill learned in Third Grade.  These students will also play recorders from January through May and be offered the same bargain as our third graders.  The Fourth Graders took the stage on November 15, 2007 presenting, “The American Dream”.  They learned about defining moments in American History and gave a dazzling performance!
5th Grade
The Fifth Graders will study all phases of Music.  They will be exposed to many kinds of Music, which will serve to broaden their horizons.  The students will be preparing for Middle School Music – chorus, band, or orchestra.  The Fifth Graders appeared with the Fourth Graders in November for “The American Dream” program.  They learned that America was built on the dreams of many people.  Perhaps their dreams for our country will one day come true!

Bethel Manor Eagle Chorus
This year all fourth and fifth graders will be invited to audition for the Eagle Chorus.  The Chorus will consist of approximately 25 fourth graders and 25 fifth graders.  So far this year our Chorus has performed in December at the Norfolk International Airport, Patrick Henry Mall, and here at Bethel Manor.  They are spectacular!  Do not miss their Spring Concert, “Born To Make Music”, on March 27, 2008 here at school.  It will begin at 7:00 p. m.  We hope to travel into the community to present our Spring Concert in April or May. Our Bethel Manor Eagle Chorus is already soaring to success!
