In 4th grade we will be studying:

Social Studies
- Students will be learning all about the state of Virginia. We will begin with map skills and identify the 5 regions of Virginia Students will discover the landforms, products, industries and tourist attractions located in each of these regions. Please review Interactive Notebooks with your child each night to review important information about Virginia.

Reading - We will cover many skills while reading some great stories. Some of the skills to be covered in this unit include: characterization, sequencing, comparing/contrasting, comprehension and reading for details. Please encourage your child to read nightly for at least 20 minutes.

Math -We will cover bar graphs, line graphs, and coordinate grids. We will move into working with place value into the millions. We will learn to write numbers in word form, standard form, compare numbers and round numbers using the rounding rap. We will move into computation and estimation with addition and subtraction of two and three digit numbers. We will discuss identifying and creating number patterns. Toward the end of the quarter we will be reviewing multiplication facts. Please practice at home. This will help with learning and practicing their facts.

Science -We will continually cover SOL 4.1 Scientific Investigation over the course of the year. We will learn about SOL 4.2(moving objects, potential and kinetic energy, motion, speed and friction.) Toward the end of the 1st quarter, we will begin talking about electricity. Students should bring their science interactive notebook home to study at least 3 times a week.

Writing – We write in all subjects but we will be focusing on power writing and putting together meaningful on topic paragraphs. We also do daily oral language in the morning, journals, and spelling as a part of writing.
