Welcome to 1st Grade

We would like to welcome you and your child to our first grade classes. We have planned many activities to enhance academic and physical development, as well as social growth. There are many ways to help your child prepare for first grade. One way is to read to your child daily. If your child is able to read to you, refer to the strategies below to help him/her. Rereading familiar books is very beneficial. Learning nursery rhymes will help your child transition to reading.Keeping a daily journal will help your child improve his/her writing. on writing a complete thought, beginning with a capital letter, ending with a period, and spelling the ‘sounds’ heard. spelling is not as important at this stage)

Reading

We will be working on using a multiple of strategies to help us read.  Parents can help at home by giving the simple clues to figure out unknown words:

“Work it out.”

“Look at the picture and the beginning sound.  Think about the story.”

“Do you know a word that looks like this one?” (ie, stay looks like day)     “Do you recognize any part of that word?” (landed, ring, goes, calling)

“Guess a word, go on, go back and reread.”

“Reread and get your mouth ready with the first sound(s).

“Does it make sense? Does it look right? Can you say it that way?”
