Happy

St. Patrick’s Day

We are learning many new and exciting things.

The following is a guide to what we will be learning during the 3rd nine weeks:

Reading

Every child is now taking Accelerated Reader tests.  Please encourage your child to bring AR books home daily, read them, and bring them back to school the next day. Discuss the book with your child to make sure that he/she understands it, and ask questions about the story.

We will be working on using a multiple of strategies to help us read.  Parents can help at home by giving the simple clues to figure out unknown words:

“Work it out.”

“Look at the picture and the beginning sound.  Think about the story.”

“Do you know a word that looks like this one?” (ie, stay looks like day)     “Do you recognize any part of that word?” (landed, ring, goes, calling)

“Guess a word, go on, go back and reread.”

“Reread and get your mouth ready with the first sound(s).

“Does it make sense? Does it look right? Can you say it that way?”

Writing

Your child is now expected to write 3-4 sentences that focus on one topic.  We are working on beginning sentences with capital letters, ending with a period or a question mark, and writing a complete thought.  Many of our stories are about events that we have experienced in our classroom or at home.  Students are encouraged to write complex sentences and to add details to their writing.

Math

This quarter we will continue working on fractions 1/2 , 1/3, and ¼.  We study fractions of an object, as well as fractions of a set.

We will begin to study ordinal numbers (first, second, third,…..), place value (tens and ones), and money.  Students will be able to identify pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters, their values, and counting a mixture of pennies, nickels, and dimes.

Science

We will investigate and understand force, motion, and energy, vibrations, and sound.  We will also be submitting a project in the science fair.

Social Studies

We will study mapping skills and geography. We will be mailing out Flat Stanley letters soon so that we can learn what daily life is like in other places around the country and world.  Check out the website: www. flatstanley.com
