- Salinity is the amount of salt in the water. Salinity is measured in
parts per thousand (PPT). Ocean water has an average salinity of 35 ppt
but can vary between
- 32 ppt – 37 ppt.
- Fresh water has a salinity of .05 ppt.
- Salinity is a characteristic of the ocean that affects where marine
organisms can live. The ocean animals cells use the process of osmosis
to regulate their body’s salinity when moving into and out of areas of
water where the salinity varies. Osmosis is when higher concentrations
of salinity are pulled into lower concentrations of salinity through the
cell membranes.

- The continental shelf is that part of the ocean floor that begins at the
shoreline and gently slopes underwater to an average depth of about 430
feet. The slope begins at the edge of the continental shelf and plunges
down to depths of over two miles. The plain is the flat area of the
ocean floor.

- It’s a current. A stream of water that flows through the ocean like a
river is a current. The current that flows in a northerly direction on
the coast of the US is the Gulf Stream. Surface currents are driven by
the wind.
