Textbook:  Geometry, Integration, Applications, Connections, Glencoe

Course Description:  In this course, you will learn basic geometric definitions and notation, deductive reasoning skills, angles formed by various lines and shapes (triangles, polygons etc.), coordinate systems, and properties of quadrilaterals.

Course Competencies:  Upon completion of this course, you will:  Understand basic geometric definitions and notation, solve practical problems involving lines, shapes, angles, and coordinate systems, and utilize deductive reasoning skills while constructing proofs and judging the validity of logical arguments.

Course Outline:

I.  First Quarter:

A. Basic Definitions and Notation

B.  Deductive Reasoning and Proofs

C.  Perpendicular Parallel Lines

            II.  Second Quarter:

D.     Congruent Triangles

E.     Quadrilaterals

Course Requirements:  Each student is required to bring the following material to class every day:  Textbook (supplied), three ring binder with paper and graph paper, pencil, and calculator.  Any calculator that has Trigonometric functions on it will suffice for this course.  I recommend the TI-83 or TI-83+ because this calculator will be required for Algebra II.  The three ring binder is required for notes, handouts, study guides, and note supplements.

Attendance Policy:  To comply with Virginia law, students are expected to attend school everyday and to be on time unless there is an illness or death in the immediate family.

Evaluation:  Each student will earn a grade based on his/her performance, initiative, and level of effort.  All submitted papers will have the students name, date, assignment, and period listed in the upper right hand corner of the first page, and will be submitted in pencil.  The following categories will comprise the quarterly/final grade:

Homework (20%):  Homework will be assigned for each class period.  Therefore you can expect to have homework every night or every other night for this class.  To be successful in this class, it is absolutely vital that you complete the assigned homework.  Homework will be collected at random, and will be graded on a ten point system.

·         Four points for overall level of effort (all problems attempted, most completed correctly, and in a logical manner)

·         Three problems within the homework assignment will be specifically graded.  Two points will be awarded for each of theses problems, for 6 points.

**Late Homework** Homework will be accepted late.  However, three points will automatically be lost per day (days the class meets) that the homework is late.  For example, if an assignment is due on 8 September (Thursday), and it is turned in on 12 September (Monday), then the maximum grade the assignment will receive is 7 points.  If the same assignment is turned in on 14 September, it could receive a maximum of four points (two class days late).

Quizzes/Classroom Work (40%):  Students can expect quizzes or a graded in-class assignment every week.  Some will be announced ahead of time, while others will be unannounced.  The exact weight of each quiz or in-class work assignment will be at the discretion of the teacher.

Tests (40%):  Students can expect to have a test every two to four weeks. The date and time of tests will be known a minimum of one week before the exam date.  Each test will count the same as the other tests, and will comprise 40% of the students overall grade.

**Missed Work**  If you are absent (excused) on the day of a quiz, you have the number of days that you missed plus one to “make up” the quiz regardless of when the class meets again.  For example if you are excused on a Monday and Tuesday, and return to school on Wednesday, you have until, Friday to make up the required work.  Homework for the days you are absent will be turned in for grading in accordance with the quiz schedule discussed above.  If you are absent on the day of a test, a make up day and time will be arranged.  Graded in class-work that is conducted on days that a student is absent will neither count for nor against the student’s grade.

Quarter Grades:  Quarter grades are based upon the standard York County School District percentages:

            A 92-100%

            B 84-91%

            C 75-83%

            D 67-74%

            F < 67%

The final grade will be determined from the two Quarter grades and the final exam. The final exam will count as 20% of the overall grade.

Tutoring and After School Help:  I will post my availability on the board each Monday for that week.  I anticipate that I will be available for tutoring at least three days per week after school, and other times by appointment.  If you are having difficulty with any of the concepts in class, or need additional help, I highly recommend and encourage you to come see me after school.

Class Procedures and Expectations:

A.  Arriving/Leaving the Room:

·         It is expected that you will be in your seat when the bell rings.  Those that are not will be counted as tardy.

·         You may not leave during the first or last 10 minutes of class

·         You must have your own planner signed to leave the room.  You may leave a maximum of five times per quarter.  Please set aside five spaces per quarter for this class.

·         Use of the restroom or going to your locker is not guaranteed during my class

B.     Food and Drinks:

·         Food is not permitted in the classroom

·         Water is permitted provided it is in a clear plastic container with a top on it.  Soda, juice, sports drinks etc. are not permitted.
