EARLIER WORKS (1995 - 2003 )
PAINTINGS,
ETCHINGS
& DRAWINGS
In 1995, I started oil painting my
sophomore year in college at the College of William and Mary. It took
me another year to be able to mix the true colors that I saw. As challenging as it was at first, I
continued to paint and got a Bachelor's or Art with a concentration in
painting and printmaking.

MURALS
I graduated in 1998 and began a business
called Murals by Merril in Northern Virginia. I was a free-lance artist
and painted murals for businesses and home-owners in Maryland, D.C, and
Virginia.

For my floral paintings, I primed the
canvas black and laid the paint
onto the canvas with the palette knife. I also used the palette knife
for my European landscapes. I visited Europe in the summer of 1999 and
was greatly influenced by the Post Impressionistic paintings in Le
Musee d'Orsay in Paris, France.
In 2004 I began the MIS (master of interdisciplinary arts) program at
VCU and have learned new techniques, medias, and modes of design.
