January Scholarships


Who: Burger King
What: Burger King Scholars Program
How much: $1000 scholarship
Criteria: Any Virginia school student; GPA 2.5 or higher, work part-time at least 15 hr/wk
Deadline: Apply online between September 15 and February 2

Who: American Legion, Department of VA
What: Oratorical Contest to demonstrate knowledge of the US Constitution
How much: $1100 for 1st place; $600 for 2nd place and 3rd place.
Criteria: Any Virginia school student
Deadline: District contests are to be completed in January

March Scholarships


Who: American Fire Sprinkler Association
What: Essay competition-  700 to 1000 word essay on the topic: Residential automatic fire sprinklers
How much: $1500 for 1st place; $750 for 2nd place, and $500 for 3rd place.
Criteria: Any Virginia school senior
Deadline: Bibliography must include application and essay. Must be postmarked by March 1, 2008

Who: Virginia PTA
What: Scholarship in memory of M. Freida Koontz and in honor of S. John Davis
How Much: 2- $1,200.00 and several $1,000.00 (# determined at later date)
Criteria: Must be planning to pursue a career in teaching or another youth serving industry. Must have a GPA of a 2.5 or above. Must demonstrate financial need.
Deadline: All applications must be postmarked by March 1, 2008

Who: VHSL Scholastic Publications Advisory Committee
What: 2008 Col. Charles E. Savedge Scholarship
How much: $100 per year (up to $500)
Criteria:
Must be a graduating senior with a minimum of 2 years as a participant of BHS's publication staff (i.e. yearbook, newspaper, literary magazine).  Must demonstrate leadership, writing skills, design aptitude, creativity, organization, industry, teamwork, and character. One ONE student from BHS can be nominated.
Deadline:
Must be postmarked by March 1, 2008

Who: American Chemical Society
What:
ACS Scholars Program
How much:
100-$2,500-$5000 scholarships
Criteria:
Must be African-American, Hispanic, and Native American students who are plan to study chemical science.
Deadline: Applications are on www.acs.org/scholars Deadline is March 1, 2008

Who: Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation, Inc.
What: Marine Corps Scholarship
How much: ranging from $1,000-$10,000
Criteria: Must be son or daughter of active duty or reserve US Marine (see more information at www.mcsf.org) Maximum adjusted family gross income of $77,000 or less., minimum of 2.0GPA
Deadline: March 3, 2008 www.mcsf.org or applications in Guidance.

Who: Fort Eustis Officer & Civilian Spouses' Club
How much: Amount not disclosed.(in previous years, it has been approximately $1,000.)
Criteria: 3.0GPA, dependent child of active duty or retired Army personnel from Ft. Story or Ft. Eustis
Deadline: Must be postmarked by March 5, 2008

Who: SAMMY 2007, body by milk
What: Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year competition
How Much: $7,500 scholarship & a weekend at Disney World in Orlando, FL in June 2008
Criteria: Academic excellence, athletic excellence, leadership, and community service.

Who: Peninsula Counselor's Association
How much:
$500.00
Criteria:
Plan on attending a 2 or 4 year college in 2008-09, cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above. Completed application, essay, resume, 2 letters of recommendation, high school transcript.
Deadline:
Must be postmarked by March 11, 2008

Who: Delta Kappa Gamma
What:
Beta Omicron Chapter Recruitment Grant
How Much:
$500.00
Criteria:
Must be planning a career in education or social work
Deadline:
Must be submitted in guidance dept. by March 12, 2008
Applications are available in guidance. A senior from one York County High School will receive this grant.

Who: Fort Monroe Spouses' and Civilians' Club (FMSCC)
How much: Amount varies
Criteria: Dependent child of active duty or retired Army personnel from Ft. Monroe
Deadline: Must be postmarked by March 14, 2008

Who: Langley Officers' Spouses' Club
What: LOSC Scholarship
How Much: The amounts vary year to year as do the number given.  It all depends on fund raising monies gathered by March
Criteria: Must be a high school senior with a minimum of a 3.0 GPA.  Applicants should be the dependent child of an Active Duty member of the US Armed Forces.   Application must include 300 word essay, resume, transcript, and copy of sponsor or personal Military ID card

Who: Kohl's Corporation
What: Kohl's Kids Who Care
How much: 170 regional winners of $1,000; 10 National winners of $5,000
Criteria: Community service is a must!

Who: VHSL and Allstate Insurance
What: Virginia High School League Achievement Award Scholarship
How much: 10-$1,000 (Categories include Outstanding Male Athlete, Outstanding Female Athlete, Academic Activity, & Courageous Achievement)
Criteria:
Min. GPA 3.0, must have previously won at least 1 varsity letter, involvement in other school sponsored activities, outside work, etc. 2 letters of recommendation, 500 word student essay, photograph.  Only ONE student can be nominated for EACH category from BHS.
Deadline: Must be postmarked by March 15, 2008

Who: VHSL and Wachovia
What: Wachovia Citizenship Award
How much: 6- $1,000
Criteria:
Senior who participated in at least one VHSL activity, contributions to family, school, and community, good citizenship and sportsmanship, 2 letters of recommendation, essay.  Only One Male and One Female can be nominated from BHS.
Deadline:
Must be postmarked by March 15, 2008

Who: Granville P. Meade Scholarship
What:
Dept of  Education sponsored opportunity to provide financial assistance to worthy & needy VA high school seniors planning to attend college.
How Much:
$2000 per year for 4 years
Criteria:
Must demonstrate true financial need
Deadline:  Applications must be submitted to your counselor by March 21, 2008

Who: Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship Program
What:
Program designed to award those who have demonstrated OUTSTANDING academic achievement.
How much:
$1500
Criteria:
Academic achievement, three letters of recommendation, completed application
Deadline:
Applications are due to your counselor by March 21, 2008
Only one applicate can apply from Bruton. If you are interested, see your counselor.

Who: Delta Sigma Theta  
What: Williamsburg Alumnae Chapter
How Much: 3- $1000.00 each
Criteria: Must be an african-american student with a GPA of 3.0- school and community involvement a must. Must have 2 letters of recommendation.
Deadline: March 22, 2008 see your counselor in Guidance for an application

Who: Yorktown Women's Club
What:
Scholarship Competition--
How Much:
1-$1000 1-$500
Criteria:
Must be accepted by and attend a Virginia college (for $1000 scholarship) or vocational school (for $500 scholarship). Must have a GPA of at least a 2.5, extracurricular activities, community/ school service, financial need are all considered in award winner.
Deadline:
Due to your counselor by Wednesday March 26, 2008

Who: National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB)
What: NFIB Young Entrepreneur Award
How much:  $1,000
Criteria: Demonstrates entrepreneurial spirit and initiative.

Who: Virginia Credit Union
What: 2008 Dorothy J. Hall Scholarship
How much:  25-$2,500 scholarships
Criteria: Must be a member of Virginia Credit Union,  3.0 GPA,  community service, essay. 
Deadline: Applications are available in the guidance office or on www.vacu.org Deadline is March 31, 2008


What: Wilbert M. Wallace Scholarship
How much:
Amount not disclosed
Criteria:
Financial need, must be enrolled in County of York, James City or Williamsburg, GPA of at least a 2.5, must have Church involvement

APRIL Scholarships

Who: American Helicopter Society, Inc
What:
Hampton Roads Chapter (HRC) Scholarship Program
How much:
1- $2,000
Criteria:
high school seniors with the desire to pursue a career in engineering or a related technical field such as physics, math, or computer science. Award will go to a student in the Hampton Roads Area!  Students must complete application, 2 letters of recommendation, 1-3 pg essay, and transcript
Deadline:
April 1, 2008

Who: Friends of Hampton Roads, Inc.
How much:
Amount not disclosed
Criteria:
Must be minority student with a GPA of at least 3.0, have financial need, completed FAFSA form, essay no more than 1000 words (see website for essay topic), 2 letters of  recommendation

Who: St. Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic Church
What: Parish Thrift Shop Scholarship
How Much: 2 awards of $2,000.00 will be given to BHS students
Criteria: Awards granted based on content of essay- "Community Service- How Have I made a Difference?" and community service involvement in HS
Deadline: Must be received by April 1, 2008

*NOTE:*Award winners do NOT have to be attending a traditional college- any training/educational setting qualifies an applicant.

Criteria:
Academic excellence despite obstacles or special challenges, 2 letters of recommendation, strong attendance record

Who: Garland K. Keeling Memorial Scholarship Fund, Inc.
What: Keeling Scholarship
How Much: 1-$1,500 3-$1,000
Criteria: Must be graduating senior, rank in the top 25% of the class, must have received notification of acceptance from an accredited college of his/her choice on or before April 1, 2008, consideration given to character of student and financial need.
Deadline: Bruton High School can only nominate one senior.  Applications in the Guidance office.  Must be received by April 4, 2008

How Much:

Criteria:
Senior girl must be planning a career in education.  The recipient will be from one of the four high schools in York County. APPLY

What:
James City/ York County/ New Kent Bureau scholarships
How Much:

What: Director's Scholarship Program for dependents of credit union members

What: J. Theron "Tim" Timmons Scholarship
How Much: Amount not disclosed
Criteria: Minimum GPA of 3.0, 2 letters of recommendation, essay on driving issues affecting teens. Financial need must be able to be demonstrated.

Must be planning to major in the criminal justice field.
