Enrollment Procedures

Bruton High Guidance Department

Call 220-4055 to make an appointment to enroll a new student. Bring the following items to the appointment:

  • Original Birth certificate
  • 2 - Proofs of Bruton zone residence
  • Social Security card
  • Official immunization record
  • An unofficial transcript to help the counselor with course selection

YCSD Enrollment Requirements ( Reference: School Board Policy 10.4)
1. Any student entering the York County School Division for the first time is required to provide:
A. Child’s original certificate of birth or certified copy
B. Social Security number. The student’s Social Security number should be presented at the time of registration or within
90 days. (Code of Virginia, Section 22.1-260C, amended by the 1988 General Assembly)
The Virginia Department of Education requires that a Social Security number or an official waiver be on file for each
student. An identification number must be assigned to each student enrolled in a public school. Student
identification numbers are used for standardized testing and record keeping. Social Security numbers may be used
as identification for school-related purposes.
C. Documentation of a physical examination signed by a licensed physician or authorized health department official.
Students entering public elementary schools for the first time or entering York County elementary schools from outside
the Commonwealth of Virginia must have documentation of a physical examination within the past year. A School
Entrance Physical and Immunization Certificate may be obtained from any York County public school, the York County
Health Department, family practice medical office, military medical clinic, or the YCSD web site (yorkcountyschools.org).
A comprehensive physical must include a urinalysis and either a) a screening for iron-deficiency anemia, or b) hemoglobin,
or c) hematocrit. Exceptions for religious or medical reasons may be granted in accordance with the Health Code, the
Virginia School Code, State Department of Education regulations, or rulings by the Office of the Attorney General. The
Superintendent is authorized in cases of financial hardship to grant a waiver of any requirements of this policy related to
physical examination that exceed those specified by the Code of Virginia and/or the State Department of Health. (Code
of Virginia, Section 22.1-270A)
D. Documented proof of adequate immunization with the prescribed number of doses of each vaccine as required by Virginia
law. Listed below are the minimum acceptable immunization levels:
1) Diphtheria/Tetanus/Pertussis (DTP): Three (3) doses of DTP with one (1) of the three (3) administered after the fourth
birthday. If any of these doses must be administered on or after the seventh birthday, Adult Td should be used instead
of DTP.
2) Polio: A minimum of 3 doses of OPV or IPV with one dose administered after the fourth birthday. NOTE: A child who
has received 4 doses before the fourth birthday does not need an additional dose after the fourth birthday.
3) Rubella Vaccine: 1 dose on or after the first birthday.
4) Mumps Vaccine: 1 dose on or after the first birthday.
5) Measles: 2 doses required. First dose must be administered at age 12 months or older. Second dose usually is
administered at age 4-6 years (Kindergarten entry) and is given as MMR.
6) Hib: Influenza vaccine required only for children by 30 months of age administered as recommended by the American
Academy of Pediatrics.
7) Hepatitis B: 3 doses required for all children born on and after January 1, 1994 and for students entering 6th grade
on or after July 1, 2001 if unvaccinated (with at least four months spacing between the first and third doses).
8) Varicella: All susceptible children born on and after January 1, 1997, will be required to have one dose of chicken pox
vaccine not earlier than 12 months of age.
E. Documented proof that parent or other adult having custody of the child is a resident of York County. Documents that
verify York County residency include utility company statement, bank statement, major credit card statement, auto/
homeowner/rental insurance policy, notarized letter from homeowner, property tax bill, mortgage verification, close of
escrow. Two (2) of the listed documents are required as specified on the Parent Information form – Residence Verification.
2. Students entering Kindergarten must have reached their fifth birthday on or before September 30th of the year in which they
enroll.
3. Affidavit of Prior School Expulsions.
As of July 1, 1993, Section 22.1-3.2 of the Code of Virginia requires upon registration a sworn statement or affirmation indicating
whether the student has been expelled from school attendance at a private or public school for an offense relating to weapons,
alcohol or drugs, or for the willful infliction of injury to another person. Any person making a false statement shall be guilty
upon conviction of a class 3 misdemeanor.
