All YCSD Schools to Meet Accreditation Standards
15 of 19 Schools Make AYP

August 13, 2009 – Based on a review of preliminary data, all York County School Division schools will again meet the state's highest accreditation standards. Additionally, the division and 15 division schools met federal No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) standards as a result of student performance on Standards of Learning (SOL) exams taken last spring.

"I am pleased that the division and 15 of our schools met AYP," Eric Williams, Ed.D, division superintendent, said. "I also would like to commend our students and teachers for their continued achievement on SOL tests.

"All YCSD schools have earned full accreditation since the 2002-03 school year," Williams said. "That is quite an accomplishment."

The division's middle schools - Grafton Middle, Queens Lake Middle, Tabb Middle and Yorktown Middle - preliminarily met accreditation standards but did not make AYP.

Within specific sub-groups of students taking English SOL exams, Queens Lake Middle (black students and students identified as disadvantaged) and Grafton Middle (disadvantaged) did not make AYP.

Within a specific sub-group of students taking math SOL exams, Yorktown Middle (students identified as disadvantaged) did not make AYP.

Tabb Middle (students with disabilities) and Queens Lake Middle (students identified as disadvantaged and students with disabilities) did not make AYP in the Other Academic Indicator (OAI) of science.

To help students meet each year's higher NCLB standards for AYP, YCSD has implemented several new instructional initiatives:

  • New elementary and middle school math programs
  • Block scheduling in middle school
  • Revised K-12 writing model

"These instructional initiatives will continue to provide support to our students and our teachers in meeting and exceeding AYP benchmarks," Lucia Villa Sebastian, Ed.D, the division's chief academic officer, said.
