YCSD School Board Notes - November 2016

I am writing to share updates on the work from the Board and the school division from our most recent School Board work session, held on Monday, November 7, as well as information regarding the special election for District 4 School Board member.

District 4 Board Representative

As you are aware, the county held a special election this week to elect a School Board member for District 4. James Richardson was declared the winner of that race. Once the election results are certified, a date will be scheduled for Mr. Richardson to take the oath of office and serve out the remaining three years of the term. Please join me in thanking Todd Mathes for his service on the Board and to our community over the last six months.

Strategic Plan Status Update

The School Board received updates regarding progress towards several objectives of the Strategic Plan, including objectives regarding the percentage of advanced studies diploma graduates achieving the “College and Career Ready” standard on the SAT, school magnet/thematic programs, professional development activities for staff, and activities to support strong school-family relationships.

The YCSD Strategic Plan serves as a guide for the School Board and division administration to chart the path for the future success of York County's public schools. Through this plan, we set our priorities for the next five years as well as the strategies and benchmarks we will use to assess out progress in meeting these goals.

The Board reviewed a draft timeline and plans for community involvement for the development of the new Strategic Plan. The process will begin with a series of stakeholder forums in early December to gain insight and feedback. If you are interested in participating in these forums, you can submit your contact information via email.

Financial Matters

Chief Financial Officer Dennis Jarrett provided information on the Superintendent’s Proposed Capital Improvement Program (CIP) for FY18 through FY23.The CIP document provides a comprehensive listing of proposed projects for the next six fiscal years. Once approved, funds are allocated for the next fiscal year only; the remaining five years are included for planning purposes only.

The CIP is available on the division website and in public libraries. The School Board will hold a public hearing on the Superintendent’s Proposed Capital Improvements Program Monday, November 21, during the regular monthly meeting beginning at 7 p.m., at York Hall, corner of Main and Ballard streets, Yorktown.  The Board will then adopt a Proposed CIP in December and forward it to the Board of Supervisors for consideration.

Upcoming Meetings

Our next School Board meeting will be held at York Hall at 7 p.m. on Monday, November 21. All School Board meetings and work sessions are broadcast live on YCSD-TV, Channel 47 (Cox) and Channel 39 (Verizon). Meetings and work sessions are also rebroadcast on alternating nights at 7 p.m. Additional programming information is available online.

I look forward to additional opportunities to share important information regarding our schools.
