YCSD School Board Notes - August 2016


On behalf of the York County School Board and division staff members, I writing to share updates on the work of the School Board and school division staff as we prepare for the 2016-17 school year. The Board held our first work session of the school year to receive reports and discuss the following topics:

 

Academic Matters

Staff provided details on work underway to reach the objectives set forth in the Strategic Plan relating to implementation of transformative learning experiences annually, in which students conduct research and use oral and written communication skills to make productive contributions to the community while learning the content of the curriculum. As of the completion of the 2015-16 school year, four schools have achieved 100% implementation of this objective, and the majority of schools have more than 75% of teachers meeting the objective.

Operational Matters

Dr. Carl James, chief operations officer, provided an update on the proposed new elementary school. Earlier this summer, the developer of the Marquis South Pod property increased the land proffer for a school site and athletic fields to more than 14 acres. Ongoing collaboration and communication between Dr. Shandor, the county administrator, county personnel and division staff have been an integral part of the process for reviewing potential school sites and for selecting a site that would benefit our community for years to come. The division will now issue a Request for Proposals (RFP) for architectural and engineering services for the design of the new elementary school. Dr. James also shared that the division has reached an agreement with a provider in accordance with the RFP for Medical Aspects of Adolescent Sleep Patterns which is now under a final review by the County Attorney’s office. Once final approval is given, a timeline will be developed to provide the community with the research data as well as to seek input from the community on school start times.

Finally, staff provided updates on construction projects underway this summer in the division. In addition to renovations to Waller Mill Elementary School and roof repairs at the Grafton School Complex, modular units have been added to Magruder and Yorktown elementary schools as a temporary measure to address student population growth at the two schools. Staff are in the final stages of preparing the units for inspection and we currently anticipate approval for occupancy by August 26.

Our division excels not only as a result of the high standards our students and staff meet each day, but also because we are fortunate to receive strong parental and community support, including support from active PTA and PTSA groups. Please continue your involvement in your child’s education. Your time and efforts are greatly appreciated.

Additionally, School Board meetings, which are typically held on the fourth Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m. at York Hall, include time for public comment.
