New Baseball Dugouts
The division completed construction of new baseball/softball dugouts at Grafton School Complex and Bruton High School. New dugouts are currently under construction at York High School.
Elementary School Additions
The addition of classrooms at Magruder and Yorktown Elementary were completed this year, with Magruder Elementary gaining an additional four classrooms, and Yorktown Elementary ten additional classrooms.
Boys and Girls Club Construction Begins
In July, 2009 YCSD broke ground for the Boys and Girls Club at York River Academy. The completion of the project is scheduled for June 30, 2010.
The Virginia Board of Education recognized 124 schools as "Title I Distinguished Schools" for maintaining full state accreditation under the commonwealth's Standards of Learning program for two consecutive years, meeting No Child Left Behind benchmarks in reading and mathematics and having average test scores in both subjects at the 60th percentile or higher. YCSD division received a certificate celebrating its status and achievement with five Title I Distinguished Schools. The recognized schools include Bethel Manor Elementary, Dare Elementary, Magruder Elementary, Tabb Elementary and Waller Mill Elementary. For the 2008-2009 school year, data review and submission to VDOE confirmed 100% compliance with the requirement that students with disabilities aged 16 and older in the division have a coordinated set of transition activities outlined in their Individualized Education Plan.
The sixth grade classes moved to a block schedule providing an additional 135 hours of instructional time for math. "This additional instructional time will enable our teachers to implement strategies to address the specific needs of our students," Lucia Villa Sebastian, Ed.D., the division's chief academic officer, said. The division plans to implement the same block schedule for the seventh and eight grade class for the 2009/2010 school year.
The YCSD completed the implementation of a Response to Intervention program at all 10 elementary schools. As result, there have been significant reductions in referrals for special education and increases in the number students who have received individualized pro-active intervention to prevent failure. The program will expand to the 6th grade in 2009-2010.
The Autism Co-hort program through Virginia Commonwealth University provided graduate level certification in autism to eight YCSD employees. These employees made a two year service commitment to provide training, evaluation and technical assistance to YCSD staff and parents in the area of autism.
In March 2009, the York County School Board approved an attendance zone adjustment for students living in the Naval Weapons Station housing to relieve overcrowded conditions at MacGruder Elementary School. Students living to the north of Lebanon Church Road were shifted to the York zone schools of Yorktown Elementary, Yorktown Middle and York High. Students to the south of Lebanon Church Road continue to attend the Bruton zone schools of Magruder Elementary, Queens Lake Middle and Bruton High.
