
Hardware
Online courses require access to a computer capable of playing multimedia
and accessing the Internet. This means a computer with enough system memory
(32 megabytes RAM or more) and a processor fast enough to play movie files.
In addition, the hard drive needs to be large enough to save these types of
files or student must have an alternative method of saving files (e.g., CD
burner, Zip drive, etc.).
Equipment Requirements:
PC: Windows 95, 98,
2000, XP, or NT
1. At least 233 MHz processor
2. 32 megabytes of system RAM
3. Super VGA monitor or higher resolution
4. Active Internet connection
5. CD ROM drive
6. Sound card and speakers
Macintosh: Power PC-based Mac running
at 100 MHz or higher
1. System 7.5.3 operating system or later version
2. 24 megabytes of system RAM with virtual memory turned on
3. Macintosh-compatible monitor or higher resolution
4. Active Internet connection
5. CD ROM drive
6. Sound card and speakers
Software
Participants must have the necessary software to successfully access all files
submitted within Blackboard. The YCSD will provide a CD with appropriate free
software and plug-ins used, and instructions on how to download some of these
programs will be included. The most current versions of the plugins are recommended.
All other software must be provided by the student.
Requirements include:
1. Microsoft Internet Explorer (version 5.0 or higher) or Netscape (version 6.0 or higher)[Java enabled browser]
2. Microsoft Office 97, 2000 or XP (including Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Access)

Internet and
E-mail Account
The participant must have an active Internet service and an e-mail account
that supports hypertext links and e-mail attachments. An Internet Service
Provider (ISP) is a company that provides you with the software and access
necessary for getting onto the Internet. A current e-mail address is needed
for all virtual courses to allow communication between the instructor and
other students.
