| This course provides students with the opportunity to receive additional instruction in reading. Skill improvement in reading comprehension, vocabulary development, structural analysis, and specific English Standards of Learning are the main componenets of this course. |
| Advanced Literary Arts I | |
| These interdisciplinary courses are explorations of the basic elements of the fine and literary arts with an emphasis on the relationship among the arts and the development of standards to differentiate between the meaningful and the mundane in the arts. They also include an analysis of 19th and 20th century literature with emphasis on literary devices and techniques and the elements of character, setting, and theme. Students are involved in a study of skills, techniques, and models for writing fiction and nonfiction, and for gathering information through primary and secondary sources to include the use of electronic data bases. Students plan and present individual and group presentations integrating art and literature and use collaborative strategies to evaluate various genres in literature to include essays, short stories, novels, drama, and poetry. The courses help prepare students for the Advanced Placement Test in English. | |

| This is an advanced literature and composition course which helps students prepare for the Advanced Placement test. Emphasis is on the best authors from all countries. Students taking this course are required to take the Advanced Placement Exam. Students who do not take the Advanced Placement Exam will not receive credit for the course. | |

| This course focuses on oral and written communication in the areas of computer-generated research, literary analysis, and technical forms. Critical reading skills, knowledge of literary forms, oral presentation, and interdisciplinary approaches are incorporated into a genre-based format in literature. | |

| This course stresses reading from a variety of worldwide cultures and eras. Readings include various literary forms as well as consumer materials. The student uses writing for evaluation and interpretation of ideas obtained through the readings. Small-group learning activities are used for the student to present and critique oral reports. In both reading and writing activities, including research, students gather information through the use of technology. | |

| This course incorporates a study of American literature with interdisciplinary aspects of United States history. The emphasis is on written as well as oral communication encompassing expository, persuasive, and technical skills. Literary analysis, research, and technical writings are included. | |

| This course presents the cultural development of English (British) literature and literature of other cultures by stressing major literary forms, themes, and techniques in an interdisciplinary approach. The student develops expository and technical writings. Comprehensive oral presentations and research projects reflect organizational skills, audience awareness, and appropriate vocabulary/grammar. |
