The IB Programme Description

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme is an international, college preparatory course of study for academically-talented students in grades 11 and 12. Admission to the Pre-IB Programme for grades 9 and 10 is by application, and the program prepares accepted students for participation in the IB Programme in their junior and senior years. All IB courses are taught by instructors trained in IB instruction at workshops conducted by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO). The courses are designed to develop in students strong writing, time management, and critical/higher-order thinking skills. In addition, through these courses, each student is exposed to the interdisciplinary nature of the IB liberal arts curriculum.

Worldwide IB

Currently there are nearly 2000 schools in over 124 countries that offer the IB Diploma. The IB curriculum and examinations hold students to high international standards benchmarking them against the brightest and best not only within Virginia and the United States but the world! The extensive demands of the IB Programme prepare IB diploma holders to seek admission to some of the most prestigious colleges and universities worldwide, from Harvard and Stanford to Heidelberg, Oxford, and the Sorbonne.

Academic Expectations/Requirements

The minimum Grade Point Average for the IB Programme is indicated in the IB Programme admissions agreement. Beginning with the Class of 2009, Pre-IB with Pre-Diploma/IB students are required to have a minimum GPA of 3.0 at the end of 9th grade, a 3.25 at the end of 10th grade, and a 3.4 at the end of 11th grade. Students who do not maintain the minimum GPA are subject to being withdrawn from the IB Programme.
Beginning with the Class of 2009, students may not earn a final grade lower than a C in any course and remain in the Pre-IB with Pre-Diploma/IB Programme..

IB - Students who complete the Pre-IB with Pre-Diploma courses in grades 9 and 10 may then enroll in the IB course of study that spans grades 11 and 12. IB courses marked SL (Subsidiary Level) require a minimum of 150 instructional hours. Courses marked HL (Higher Level) require 240 instructional hours and carry weighted credit. In addition to courses from six areas, the following are requirements of the IB Programme: a Theory of Knowledge (ToK) course, 150 hours of Community/Action/Service (CAS), and an Extended Essay (4,000 words of original research). Students who complete the full requirements of the IB Programme (minimum GPA of 3.25; beginning for the class of 2009, GPA of 3.4; ToK; CAS; Extended Essay) in grades 11 and 12 and who pass six IB examinations (3 at the HL level and 3 at the SL level) are eligible to receive the IB Diploma (issued by the IBO) in addition to the appropriate York County School Division diploma. Students who complete the IB course requirements and who pass fewer than six IB examinations are eligible to receive with their York County School Division diploma IB certificates for the IB examinations passed. Notes: Academic courses taken by students in the IB Programme must be completed during the regular academic year, not during summer school.
