International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme
The International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme is an international,
college preparatory course of study for academically-talented
students in grades 11 and 12.
Admission to the Pre-IB Programme for grades
9 and 10 is by application, and the program prepares
accepted students for participation in the IB Programme
in their junior and senior years.
All IB courses are taught by instructors trained
in IB instruction at workshops conducted by the International
Baccalaureate Organization (IBO). The courses are designed to develop in students
strong writing, time management, and critical/higher-order
thinking skills. In
addition, through these courses, each student is exposed
to the interdisciplinary nature of the IB liberal arts
curriculum. Worldwide
IB Currently there are nearly 2000 schools in over 124 countries that
offer the IB Diploma.
The IB curriculum and examinations hold students
to high international standards benchmarking them
against the brightest and best not only within Academic
Expectations/Requirements The minimum Grade Point Average for the IB Programme is indicated in the IB Programme admissions agreement. Beginning with the Class of 2009, Pre-IB with Pre-Diploma/IB students are required to have a minimum GPA of 3.0 at the end of 9th grade, a 3.25 at the end of 10th grade, and a 3.4 at the end of 11th grade. Students who do not maintain the minimum GPA are subject to being withdrawn from the IB Programme. IB - Students
who complete the Pre-IB with Pre-Diploma courses in grades 9 and 10 may
then enroll in the IB course of study that spans grades
11 and 12. IB
courses marked SL (Subsidiary Level) require a minimum
of 150 instructional hours.
Courses marked HL (Higher Level) require 240
instructional hours and carry weighted credit. In addition to courses from six areas, the following
are requirements of the IB Programme:
a Theory of Knowledge (ToK) course, 150 hours
of Community/Action/Service (CAS), and an Extended Essay
(4,000 words of original research).
Students who complete the full requirements of
the IB Programme (minimum GPA of 3.25; beginning for the class of 2009, GPA of 3.4; ToK; CAS; Extended
Essay) in grades 11 and 12 and who pass six IB examinations
(3 at the HL level and 3 at the SL level) are eligible
to receive the IB Diploma (issued by the IBO) in addition
to the appropriate York County School Division diploma. Students who complete the IB course requirements
and who pass fewer than six IB examinations are eligible
to receive with their York County School Division diploma
IB certificates for the IB examinations passed.
Notes: Academic courses taken by students in the
IB Programme must be completed during the regular academic
year, not during summer school.
Rising 9th grade students are encouraged to apply for
acceptance into the Pre-IB with Pre-Diploma Programme.
Prior to submitting an application, students
must meet the following criteria indicated below in
grade 8. Note: Transfer students may be eligible to
apply for the IB Programme.

Minimum GPA of 3.0 in CORE courses

Enrollment in French I or Spanish I with a minimum grade of B
§
Enrollment in at least Algebra I with a minimum grade of B
§
Enrollment in Advanced English 8 with a minimum grade of B An application packet, available in middle school guidance offices and online
must be completed and submitted by the scheduled deadline
each year. The application packet requires the items
listed below.

Five teacher recommendations
§
A personal essay of 250 words or less
§
A personal interview with the IB Programme Coordinator or IB instructors
§
An admissions agreement signed by the student and his/her parent/guardian IB

Course
Pre-IB and IB students are picked up at their zoned school site
and transported to and from the IB site at Pre-IB with Pre-Diploma
Programme/Honors Program Pre-IB with Pre-Diploma students may opt to leave the Pre-IB with Pre-Diploma Programme at the end
of the first semester of the freshman year or at the
end of the freshman year and re-enroll in the Honors
Program at their home schools if they are eligible to
do so. In order
to transfer from Pre-IB with Pre-Diploma to the Honors Program, Pre-IB with Pre-Diploma
students must have been officially enrolled in the Honors
Program as 8th grade students. Pre-IB with Pre-Diploma students who opt back into the Honors
Program must complete the Honors Program as prescribed
upon returning to their home schools.
Students exiting the Pre-IB with Pre-Diploma Programme after the
beginning of the sophomore year are not eligible to
re-enroll in the Honors Program.
The
International Baccalaureate Advisory Committee (IBAC) The International Baccalaureate Advisory Committee (IBAC) is comprised
of parents of students enrolled in the Pre-IB with Pre-Diploma and IB
Programmes, Pre-IB with Pre-Diploma and IB student representatives, the
IB Coordinator, and other school division instructional
staff. This committee
serves in an advisory capacity in support of the IB
Programme in the York County School Division.
The IBAC meets four times annually, and the meetings
are open to the public. The schedule of IBAC meetings is available from
the IB Coordinator.
