| Waller Mill Elementary School recently hosted its annual fourth grade science fair.

| Students at Grafton Bethel Elementary School celebrated Earth Day by planting a flowering cherry tree that was donated to the school by the energy educator department Hale Herndon, YCSD energy educator.

| Seaford Elementary held a Bulldog Fitness Day to encourage students and their parents to get up and get moving toward a healthy, physically active lifestyle. A wide variety of activities were available, including gymnastics, martial arts, and a marathon. After events, participants were treated to free massages.

| Natasha Rigby, a performer with the Alvin Ailey Dance Company, recently visited Waller Mill Elementary School Fine Arts Magnet as part of the Virginia Arts Festival. Rigby taught dance classes for fourth grade students in preparation for a field trip to watch the Alvin Ailey Dance Company perform.

| 5/9/2008 | YORKTOWN ELEMENTARY STUDENTS CELEBRATE EARTH DAY | |
| Students at Yorktown Elementary School celebrated Earth Day at all grade levels by taking part in a variety of green activities, including making bird feeders to help animals survive, planting bulbs and flowers, recycling cans in the entire school, picking up trash and cleaning the school grounds and completing a Carbon Footprint activity. Even Kindergarten students joined in as they studied the earthworm as a decomposer and made their own earthworms to eat.

| 5/9/2008 | FAMILY LITERACY NIGHT AT YES | |
| Family Literacy Night was held on April 22 at Yorktown Elementary Math, Science and Technology Magnet School. A Partners in Print Meeting was held followed by a pizza dinner. Every child received a free book from the book swap table. The Yorktown Public Library held a library card sign up and literacy stations were set up throughout the school. Make and Take activities were available in the classrooms for all who attended Family Literacy Night.
